REPORTER in Socorro, New Mexico at Number Nine Media Inc

The El Defensor Chieftain is looking for a curious, driven, and community-minded Reporter who is passionate about uncovering meaningful stories, building relationships, and delivering accurate, engaging journalism that keeps our readers informed.

Responsibilities:

• Report, write, and photograph for weekly assignments.
• Collect, verify, and analyze newsworthy information.
• Investigate leads, interview sources, and conduct thorough research.
• Write clear, engaging, and accurate news stories for publication.
• Publish articles using a content management system.
• Adhere to journalism ethics and industry standards.
• Attend and cover local events, writing captions and brief recaps when needed.
• Assist editorial staff with proofreading and fact-checking.
• Stay informed on current events and community issues.
• Collaborate with editors, reporters, and photographers.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Editor.

• 2+ years of Journalism experience required.
• Strong writing, research, and interviewing skills.
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
• Ability and Knowledge to accurately cover a variety of local sports events.
• Basic photography skills.
• Experience with content management systems preferred.
• Familiarity with AP style and journalism best practices.
• Willingness to cover local events outside regular hours.
• Must be located in Socorro, NM, or the surrounding area for local in-person coverage.
