Location: Boone, North Carolina | Full-Time
Department: Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center – Medical Oncology
Compensation: Starting at $16.45/hour based on education, experience, certification, and internal equity
Status: Non-Exempt

What You'll Do as a Medical Oncology Clinic Receptionist

  • Greet patients, families, visitors, and healthcare professionals with warmth, professionalism, and compassion

  • Answer incoming phone calls, provide general information, and direct calls to the appropriate department or team member

  • Schedule patient appointments while maintaining accuracy and efficiency within the scheduling system

  • Verify and update patient demographic and insurance information

  • Assist patients with check-in and check-out processes

  • Provide information regarding clinic services, appointments, and general inquiries

  • Direct patients to appropriate waiting areas and offer assistance as needed

  • Maintain accurate patient records while ensuring HIPAA compliance and confidentiality

  • Perform administrative duties including data entry, filing, document management, and coordination of paperwork

  • Communicate effectively with providers, nurses, and clinical staff to support efficient clinic operations

  • Relay messages and important information promptly and accurately

  • Serve as a patient advocate by addressing questions and concerns with empathy, professionalism, and excellent customer service

  • Support a welcoming, organized, and efficient front office environment that reflects UNC Health Appalachian's mission, vision, and values

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred, but not required

Experience

  • One (1) year of experience in a medical office or clinic setting preferred

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and medical office procedures

  • Strong communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills

  • Knowledge of HIPAA and patient privacy regulations

  • Proficiency with computers, scheduling systems, and office applications

  • Excellent organizational, attention-to-detail, and time-management skills

  • Ability to multitask, adapt to changing priorities, and work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged sitting while performing front desk and computer-based work

  • Occasional standing to assist patients and visitors at the reception area

  • Minimal lifting of files, office supplies, or equipment

  • Frequent keyboard use and computer screen time

  • Adequate vision to read documents, patient information, and electronic medical records

Working Conditions

  • Indoor, climate-controlled outpatient oncology clinic environment

  • Frequent interaction with patients, families, providers, and healthcare staff

  • Moderate noise level typical of a busy healthcare setting

  • Primarily weekday schedule, with occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays based on clinic operational needs

  • Adherence to organizational policies, safety protocols, infection prevention standards, and patient confidentiality requirements
