Utility Locator/Water & Sewer Maintenance Worker at Geneva, City of (IL) – Geneva, Illinois

The City of Geneva is seeking an experienced Utility Locator to join our team in the Water Division of Public Works. The Utility Locator assists with locating all City utilities, including underground sewer, water, and electric lines using specialty equipment such as meters, maps, and other tools. In addition to locating responsibilities, this position is an integral part of the water maintenance crew and assists with water and wastewater line maintenance and repairs. Regular duties include but are not limited to:

• Carefully and precisely locate underground utilities, including water, wastewater, electric, and fiber optic lines.
• Visibly mark located lines for visibility with paint or flags as required.
• Collaborate with other Public Works divisions, ensuring necessary information is provided to appropriate crews and contractors.
• Provide customer service and education to residents and property owners requesting JULIE location, as necessary. Obtain and prioritize JULIE requests, ensuring efficiency with workload and schedule to maximize productivity.
• Locate and mark B-boxes (buffalo boxes).
• Observe and oversee excavations around highly sensitive utility lines to eliminate the possibility of damage.
• Perform Water and Sewer Maintenance duties, including repairing, replacing and installing water mains.
• Respond to after-hours on-call (rotation) and emergency callouts as necessary.
• Assist with snow removal operations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Ideal candidates will possess the following, or have a combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job:

• A high school diploma, GED or equivalent; and,
• Previous experience locating utilities
• Valid Driver’s License CDL Class A with tanker endorsement (if not possessed at hire, must be obtained during the probationary program)
• IL EPA Class D Water Operators Certification (required upon receiving requisite number of on-the-job hours)

Work is primarily performed outdoors, and incumbents are subject to a variety of environmental conditions and exposures. This position primarily works 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday, with occasional after-hours duties as necessary.

The Utility Locator/Water and Sewer Maintenance Worker is subject to emergency and after-hours callback. Due to this, candidates must reside within a 16-mile straight-line radius of the City's boundaries within one year of employment. You can review the residency map on our website.

The starting base rate of pay for this position is negotiable with a range of $30.40 - $41.03 per hour. The anticipated starting pay is up to $32 per hour, depending on qualifications.
