Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Family Services, the Community Outreach Worker is responsible for managing a caseload of clients, supporting the Family Services team, and organizing community programming and events. This role involves providing direct client services, developing and implementing community initiatives, and performing various administrative duties. The Community Outreach Worker will also assist with community outreach programs and ensure that all activities align with the Nation’s needs and values.

Key Responsibilities

General Duties:

  • Collaborate with the Family Services team and provide staff relief for community outreach programs during absences, including Breakfast Club and Meals on Wheels.

  • Complete projects assigned by the Director of Family Services, which may include research, budget creation, and work plan development.

  • Assist in providing programming across all areas of the Family Services Department, such as services for Elders, children, youth, families, and vulnerable community members.

  • Plan and execute community functions, including cooking, facilitating workshops, and organizing educational events to address community issues and provide solutions.

  • Identify community gaps and create programming to address these needs.

Support Work:

  • Manage a caseload of clients, offering direct services such as youth support, mentorship, household management strategies, advocacy, referrals, and assistance with navigating systems.

  • Provide transportation for clients as needed.

  • Offer one-on-one support to community members both on and off-reserve.

  • Assist clients with budgeting strategies, self-advocacy skills, and household management.

Programming and Events:

  • Develop monthly programming calendars and manage time effectively.

  • Host workshops and events for the community, focusing on:

    • Educational and skill-building workshops (e.g., boundary setting, lateral kindness, food security, cedar weaving).

    • Community-building events (e.g., community Christmas dinner, Easter fun days, end-of-summer fun days).

  • Incorporate culturally sensitive practices and elements into all programming and activities.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and submit weekly detailed timesheets to the Director of Family Services.

  • Prepare weekly reports and maintain accurate records of all functions, expenditures, and fundraising efforts.

  • Maintain accurate financial records and adhere to an approved budget and work plan.

Collaboration and Teamwork:

  • Work effectively with other community outreach workers to manage workloads and ensure comprehensive service delivery.

  • Support and mentor all teams within the Family Services department, fostering a collaborative work environment.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Health & Human Services or a related field preferred.

  • At least two years of recent, successful employment experience in social services.

  • Experience working within First Nation communities is considered an asset.

Certificates and Requirements:

  • Valid class 5 driver’s license in good standing.

  • Current First Aid and Food Safe certificates are strong assets.

  • Pass pre-employment Criminal Record Check and vulnerable sector screening.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong ability to manage and prioritize tasks in a high-traffic environment with frequent interruptions.

  • Effective interpersonal skills for communication and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of barriers and challenges faced by Indigenous children, families, and community members.

  • Understanding of Quatsino First Nations' social structure, traditions, and cultural values.

  • Proficiency in conflict resolution and maintaining a positive, supportive approach in all situations.

Performance Metrics

  • Event Implementation: Successfully plans and executes community events, with detailed work plans and budgets submitted on time for 100% of events.

  • Support Work: Maintains an effective caseload, providing high-quality direct services, with timely support and assistance to clients.

  • Programming and Events: Develops and hosts well-received workshops and events, achieving high participation and positive community feedback.

  • Administrative Efficiency: Submits accurate and timely weekly timesheets and reports, adhering to approved budgets and work plans.

  • Collaboration: Works effectively with the Family Services team and other stakeholders, receiving positive feedback for teamwork and collaboration.

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Incorporates culturally sensitive practices into all activities, ensuring services respect community values and traditions.

Working Conditions

  • Hours of Work: Evening and weekend work may be necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the role. Attendance at mandatory training sessions may also be required.

  • Physical Environment: Primarily office-based setting with occasional travel within the territory.

  • Physical Effort: Includes a combination of sitting, standing, and walking, which may cause muscle strain.

  • Mental / Sensory / Emotional Environment: Requires focus and concentration for extended periods, and managing emotionally demanding activities.

  • Position Required Travel: Occasional travel within the territory.
