UMC Radiation Physicist

PART I - General Job / Performance Information
Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. in Medical Physics
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in full-time radiotherapy physics in a clinical center for radiotherapy is preferred.
Environmental / Working Conditions
  • Works inside. Hours of duty may be irregular. Exposure to blood borne pathogens is of high risk with possible continuous exposure to radiation.
Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships
  • This position requires close interaction with medical staff, other nursing staff and ancillary departments in order to facilitate a quality multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.
Job Description
  • The Radiation Physicist is responsible for radiotherapy physics to include therapy machine calibration, dosimetry calculations, radiation treatment planning and maintenance of physics and dosimetry equipment. The Physicist provides medical physics expertise in support of the Department of Radiation Oncology activities. The Radiation Physicist reports to the Southwest Cancer Center Administrative Director.
Required Licensures / Certifications / Registrations
  • American Board of Radiology
  • Certification in Radiotherapy physics or eligible for ABR certification and Texas Board of Licensure or temporary license for professional medical physics.
Physical Capabilities
  • Work is of medium demand and mostly sedentary. Hours may be long and irregular with heavy lifting levels required for patients and equipment. Must work closely with the Radiation Oncologist and the Administrative Director.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail. Knowledge of all aspects of dosimetry to include: calculations, the treatment planning process, and quality assurance. Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care.
