Senior Field Service Technician

Description:
The Senior Field Service Technician – Power Systems supports the startup, commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical power distribution systems at customer sites throughout the greater Houston, Texas area. This role serves as the on-site technical lead, working independently to execute complex field projects, ensure safe system energization, and deliver high-quality service to customers.
The position requires regular local travel to multiple customer locations within the Houston metropolitan area. Overnight travel is limited and typically not required, though occasional extended hours may be necessary during critical commissioning or energization activities.
Responsibilities:
Lead startup, commissioning, and acceptance testing of electrical power systems, including medium voltage switchgear, low voltage switchgear, switchboards, motor control centers (MCCs), and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
Perform advanced electrical testing, including insulation resistance, contact resistance, relay testing, and functional verification.
Interpret complex one-line diagrams, schematics, and control logic.
Diagnose and resolve system issues independently in the field.
Serve as the on-site lead, coordinating with customers, contractors, and engineers.
Make real-time decisions during system energization and project execution.
Prepare complete, accurate, and customer-ready field service reports.
Mentor and develop junior technicians, providing guidance and training in field operations.
Ensure strict adherence to safety standards, including NFPA 70E and OSHA requirements.
Support continuous improvement of field service processes and standards.
Travel to customer sites as required to support project execution.
Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements:
5–10+ years of experience in field service, commissioning, or electrical testing.
Strong experience with medium voltage and low voltage power distribution systems.
Proven ability to lead field projects independently.
Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic capability.
Strong communication and leadership skills in field environments.
Willingness to travel as required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience aligned with InterNational Electrical Testing Association (NETA) standards.
NETA Certification (Level II–IV) preferred.
Experience with protective relays and control systems.
OEM training (Siemens, Eaton, Schneider, ABB).
Journeyman or Master Electrician license.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
This role requires regular standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, kneeling, bending, and working in industrial and outdoor environments, including electrical rooms, substations, and construction sites.
The Senior Power Systems Field Service Technician must be able to safely lift, carry, push, and pull tools and test equipment weighing up to 50 pounds independently on a regular basis.
Occasional handling of heavier equipment may be required and is typically performed using mechanical assistance, carts, hoists, or team-lifting in accordance with company safety procedures and OSHA guidelines.
The role requires the ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including arc-flash protective gear, and to work extended hours during system startup, commissioning, and energization activities.
