THE ROLE

This is a full time, non-exempt position responsible for performing a wide range of repair and maintenance tasks on industrial recycling equipment and heavy machinery. Mechanic II performs diagnostics and troubleshooting of complex mechanical, electrical and hydraulic issues, completes preventative maintenance, and supports plant reliability and uptime.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  • Perform diagnostics on complex mechanical, electrical and hydraulic issues using advanced tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Conduct repairs and overhauls on industrial equipment including cranes/overhead hoists, load handling systems, conveyors, pumps and electric motors, gearboxes, and hydraulic rams/cylinders used in recycling operations.
  • Inspect and evaluate equipment to identify signs of wear, malfunction, or damage; recommend repairs or replacements to minimize downtime.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing fluids, filters, belts, hoses, seals, and checking safety features/guards.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic and electrical systems, utilizing schematics and wiring diagrams to resolve issues.
  • Assist with major equipment overhauls and replacement of large/heavy components; coordinate rigging and safe work execution.
  • Ensure repairs are completed in a timely and cost-effective manner, minimizing equipment downtime and improving operational efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair logs, documenting all work performed on equipment.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and other mechanics to coordinate repairs and schedules, ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently.
  • Train and mentor entry-level mechanics by sharing technical knowledge and offering guidance in troubleshooting and repair techniques.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards by using proper PPE and following safety procedures during all repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Stay updated with new equipment technologies and repair techniques to enhance job performance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in mechanics preferred.

3–5+ years of experience as an industrial maintenance mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic (plant/recycling experience preferred).

Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, tools, and repair techniques; working knowledge of hydraulics and electrical troubleshooting.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks.

Proficiency in using diagnostic tools (and software, as applicable).

Welding/fabrication skills.

Recycling plant maintenance, rotating equipment reliability, or conveyor/shredder maintenance experience.

Basic controls/PLC exposure or advanced electrical troubleshooting experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND REQUIREMENTS

Environmental conditions - Must work outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat. May at times be exposed to dangerous and/or toxic substances and must take necessary precautions to protect eyes, nose and skin from irritation and infection.

Mental demands- Conditions that may lead to mental or emotional fatigue.

Occasionally lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling 25 to 50 pounds.

Climb on and around equipment and sit for long periods while operating equipment.

Walk and stand for long periods of time.

Able to climb a minimum of 2 story of stairs.
