Unit Details

Wound, ostomy, and continence nursing is a multifaceted, evidence-based specialty practice incorporating a unique body of knowledge to provide excellence in prevention, health, maintenance, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitative nursing care to persons with select disorder of the gastrointestinal (GI), genitourinary (GU), and integumentary systems. This specialty encompasses the care of patients across the continuum of care from pediatric to geriatric populations. While serving a pivotal role in direct patient care, they also serve as educators, researchers, and consultants to achieve positive patient outcomes.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with physicians and other direct care staff to create and implement treatment plans for patients with alterations of the integumentary system including ulcers of multiple etiology, surgical wounds, trauma and infections, burns, alterations of the GI and GU systems, including stoma, tube care and management.
  • Provides patient and caregiver teaching about proper skin, wound, and ostomy care in order to promote healing and prevent infections. He/she serves as a resource in identifying patient skin, wound, and ostomy care needs and problems, and assists with identifying solutions for those needs and problems. He/she provides instruction to the patient home health nurses, SNF nurses, care givers on how to use medications, dressings, and stoma appliances.
  • Additionally, provides acute and rehabilitative care to patients with continence disorders. He/she provides identification of patients requiring referral for assessment/management of complex urinary or fecal incontinence.
  • The wound care nurse will engage in quality assessment/process improvement and in research activities related to skin, wound, and ostomy care in order to promote evidence-based nursing practice. This will include evaluating new products related to skin, wound, and ostomy care.

Qualifications

  • SC RN license required. ADN candidates must be enrolled in a BSN program within 18 months from date of hire and are required to obtain BSN within four (4) years of date of hire. For current AnMed Health Associate Degree Nurses (ADN) who were hired as RNs prior to January 1, 2013, and already working as an acute care Staff Nurse as of that date, the requirement to obtain BSN within four (4) years will be waived.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years clinical experience preferred.
  • Previous experience caring for chronic wounds and a sound knowledge base of diabetes, arterial/vascular disease, surgical and trauma wounds preferred.
