Job Description

Surgical Technologist Intern

Position Summary:
The surgical Technologist Intern assists in nursing care and preparation of
surgical patients in the Surgical Service Areas. He/she functions as a member of
the sterile team in donning gown and gloves, creating and maintaining a sterile
field and issuing instruments to surgeons utilizing AORN standards of care.

Qualifications:
Education:
i. Interns must be attending a CAAHEP-accredited program for
Surgical Technology and maintain a 3.0 GPA in order to qualify for
internship.
ii. Intern will work under the supervision of a graduate of an
accredited School of Surgical Technology (according to Texas
Surgical Technologist Law Sec 259.002)
iii. Interns must consistently work towards graduation from a
CAAHEP-accredited program while employed with immediate
notification of dismissal or withdrawal from the CAAHEP-accredited
program.
Training and Experience:
i. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American
Heart Association upon hire or transfer to department.
ii. Complete the following competencies within three (3) months of
hire or transfer to department.
• Aseptic Technique
• Gowning and gloving
• Surgical hand scrub
• Surgical case preparation
• Sterile case set-up
• Surgical Draping

• Intraoperative actions
• Postoperative actions
iii. Basic daVinci Robotic Surgery proficiency within 1 year of hire
dates
Unusual Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
A. Ability to perform:
i. Heavy Lifting
ii. Sustained standing and walking
iii. Work under stress
iv. Schedule to facilitate a beneficial work/school balance for intern
v. Intern would not be eligible for call schedule or overtime
vi. Intern would be eligible for a maximum of 36 hours per week
vii. To work over 24 hours per week intern must be able to
demonstrate competent management of work and school.
Approval from both Department Director and Director of Surgical
Technology of program should be obtained to ensure successful
progression is being made towards intern’s career path.
May encounter exposure to infectious diseases.
Float to following departments with surgical services:
i. Operating Room
ii. Labor and Delivery
iii. Sterile Processing Department
Upon graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited program the intern would
apply for a position a desired position. With obligation to obtain CST
certification within 6 months of graduation date from NBSTSA or NCCT
(according to Texas surgical Technologist Law Sec 259.022).
Internships apply as experience towards career ladder.
