JOB SUMMARY
Under supervision of the registered nurse, provides direct nursing care to patients on the surgical and endoscopy units by instituting the minimum standard of care (MSOC).
MAJOR JOB FUNCTION
- Works effectively as a team member in the delivery of care and assists in the orientation of new employees.
- Ambulates and repositions patients.
- Performs I&O.
- Checks vital signs and weight.
- Performs whole blood glucose, specimen collection and transport/ log in to lab.
- Provides for comfort needs of patients.
- Promptly answers patients’ call lights and requests.
- Documents on appropriate flow sheets within specified time frame. Documentation is accurate and complete according to standards.
- Assists in evaluation of effectiveness plan of care and patient’s physical and emotional response to teaching and nursing interventions.
- Interacts effectively with patients both through oral and written communication using appropriate verbal and non-verbal behavior to reinforce the content of the message.
- Respects patient need for privacy, explains cares to patient, and treats patient as an individual with dignity.
- Maintains a safe and attractive environment for patients and co-workers; transports patients and equipment as appropriate.
- Shows dependability by being punctual; maintains consistent attendance.
- Attends staff meetings in person 80% of time. Reads and initials all meeting minutes of those not in attendance.
- Maintains a good working relationship among all nursing unit personnel and other hospital employees through appropriate communication.
- With specialized training, may perform additional and specialized tasks pertinent to assigned area such as assisting Intra-Op circulator or anesthesia with intubation/extubation, room turnover, ordering of supplies, etc.
- Accepts reassignment as needed to provide necessary care for all patients.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
2. Successful completion of Certified Nursing Assistant program and listed as current and active on the WI Nurse Aide Registry.
3. Previous hospital experience preferred.
4. Current certification or eligibility to become BLS certified.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent human relation skills as demonstrated by the ability to interface positively with all customers and employees.
- Must acquire the knowledge and maintain established competency levels to perform essential nursing practice.
- Must have proficient computer skills with the ability to operate within a Windows environment.
- Must have the ability to work with frequent interruptions, under stress and with minimal supervision.
- Needs to possess as high level of intelligence, integrity, sense of responsibility and ability to comprehend and analyze details.
- Ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment.
- Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for infant through geriatric patients.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and talk and hear.
- The CNA is frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms.
- The CNA is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch, and smell.
- The CNA must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound.
- Visual acuity is needed to assess color changes, to verify accuracy of written materials.
- Computer/keyboard skills required. Must have the ability to operate in a Windows environment.
