About This Position

Position Description:
POSITION SUMMARY

The Controller directs all accounting operations, financial reporting, treasury management, and internal controls for Anvil Corporation. Reporting to the CFO, this role safeguards company assets, ensures the integrity of financial information, and provides strategic guidance to support organizational growth. Oversees a team of 6.5 FTEs spanning accounting, billing, accounts receivable, payroll, and benefits.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Stewardship Oversee all accounting, financial reporting, and treasury activities. Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Manage project accounting functions including job costing, WIP reporting, and revenue recognition across contract types (lump sum, T&M, cost-plus).

Team Leadership Manage and develop a team of 6.5 FTEsincluding the Accounting Manager, Billing and AR Supervisor, and Payroll and Benefits Administrator. Set performance objectives, provide regular feedback, and foster a high-performance culture.

Internal Controls & Compliance Maintain internal control policies covering cash management, financial reporting, procurement, payroll, and record retention. Ensure compliance with GAAP and current FASB pronouncements. Oversee indirect cost rate development, overhead rate analysis, and cost allocation methodologies.

Systems & Automation Serve as the primary subject matter expert for the companys ERP, accounting, and payroll systems. Lead process improvement and automation initiatives. Partner with IT on system integrations, upgrades, and issue resolution.

Audit & Tax Management Direct annual financial statement audits and coordinate tax return preparation. Oversee all federal and state tax filings including property, payroll, and state/city filings. Manage relationships with external audit firms and tax advisors.

Billing, Payroll & Revenue Cycle Oversee billing and payroll operations to ensure accurate project-based billing, proper application of client contract terms, and proactive accounts receivable management. Ensure payroll compliance with federal and state employment law.

Insurance & Retirement Plan Administration Manage the annual insurance renewal process and validate coverage against contractual requirements. Support the CFO in administering retirement plans including eligibility, compliance testing, and regulatory filings.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required
  • Education: Bachelors degree in Accounting.
  • Experience: Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in financial management, including supervisory responsibility.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (financial modeling, pivot tables, complex formulas); strong working knowledge of ERP and accounting software systems used in project-based or professional services environments.
  • Knowledge: Thorough understanding of GAAP, FASB standards, internal control frameworks (e.g., COSO), and project accounting principles including job costing, WIP reporting, and revenue recognition.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills with a proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally across departments.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Organization: Proven ability to prioritize competing demands, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and consistently meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred
  • Education: Masters degree in Accounting, Finance, or MBA with an Accounting concentration.
  • Certification: CPA (active or inactive) or equivalent professional designation.
  • Background: Prior experience in public accounting (audit or advisory). Familiarity with overhead rate development, indirect cost allocation, and cost-plus or time-and-materials contract structures.
  • Additional: Experience with system implementations, ERP migrations, or large-scale process improvement initiatives.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Able to sit/stand, type, and perform computer work for long periods of time.
  • Frequent use of hands/fingers for computer entry and answering calls.
  • Able to perform occasional bending, lifting, and reaching.
  • Must be able to lift 15 lbs if necessary.
  • Visual acuity sufficient for reading documents and computer screens
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally in-person, by phone, and via video conferencing.
  • Hearing ability adequate for meetings, presentations, and collaboration.
  • Ability to concentrate and maintain attention for extended periods while managing multiple priorities.
