Assistant Professor of Practice in Education, 2026-2027 Academic Year

William Jewell College invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Practice in Literacy Education. This is a part-time, non-tenure-track position beginning August 2026, with rank depending on qualifications. The position involves a 9-month, two-semester (Fall/Spring) contract with possibility of renewal on an annual basis. Candidates must have a terminal (Ph.D./Ed.D.) degree in secondary education, elementary education, curriculum and instruction, or in a closely related field. The ideal candidate is qualified to teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses within the Teacher Education Program, including theory and methods courses in differentiated instruction, content area literacy, special education, and educational research methods. An ability to teach and mentor graduate student research, as well as experience in practicum supervision (student teaching/fieldwork) is highly preferred. The candidate will also provide evidence of an active research or professional development agenda and willingness to participate in departmental curriculum development and practicum supervision.
Applicants should demonstrate a passion for teaching, mentoring, and advising at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels; strong leadership and collaboration skills; ability to supervise students in a practicum setting; and the desire to integrate fully into a critical thinking, liberal arts college community. Individuals with a background with culturally and linguistically diverse student populations, special education students, and/or immigrant populations are especially encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Education or closely related field is strongly preferred. ABD candidates or those with specialist degrees and extensive educational experience will be considered
  • A teaching certificate and at least 3 years teaching experience at the elementary or secondary level (grades K-12) is required
  • Ability to teach courses across the undergraduate and graduate Education curriculum
  • Ability to supervise students in practicum settings and serve as College supervisor for student teachers
  • Rank is dependent on academic credentials and professional experience
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teaching 16 contact hours per year (8 course credits per semester), utilizing in-person and hybrid learning formats. Additional evening or summer course loads are available for additional stipend
  • Supervising preservice teachers in fieldwork and student teaching placements
  • Service to the College and community including academic advising and recruiting as well as involvement in Education program activities
  • Working with Education Faculty to develop curriculum and assessment tools, as well as assisting with College, State, and National accreditation
  • Assisting Education Faculty in the revision of teacher education curriculum based on best practices and the Missouri Teacher Standards.
  • Developing a program of scholarly activity and service, including partnerships with area K-12 schools and mentoring undergraduate/graduate student research
