GBI has always maintained that our employees are our greatest asset. We are now seeking to add a Building Superintendent to our team in Waikoloa, on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Position Summary

The Building Superintendent monitors the day-to-day activities of crews on a project or numerous projects by providing guidance/direction to the crews to meet budgets and deadlines for each project. They participate in planning the project to determine equipment and craft resources. In the field, the superintendent performs regular on-site inspections of the project with the Project Manager and Project Engineer. They enforce company policies, rules and safety procedures to crews.

Essential Functions

  • Receives instructions of upcoming tasks from Project Manager.
  • Participates in pre-surveying large job sites with the Project Manager.
  • Participates in determining the need for construction equipment, materials and parts, personnel, safety equipment with the Project Manager.
  • Coordination of manpower and equipment for the projects assigned to them.
  • Participates in schedule updates and reviews.
  • Able to read construction plans.
  • Assists in reviewing JHA's.
  • Ensures JHA's are being followed.
  • Assists in developing and reviewing Work Plans.
  • Ensures Work Plans are being utilized.
  • Schedules and assigns personnel to various projects.
  • Coordinates with project Foreman regarding daily work to be completed.
  • Assists Foreman with training of craft personnel.
  • Assists Foreman with maximizing the crews production and efficiency by ensuring that we are building the work safely and ensuring that it is built right the first time without any quality issues.
  • Makes regular site inspections to check on work techniques and progress.
  • Prepares and inspects trucks, trailers and equipment needed for the next day's work.
  • Checks safety precautions and use of prescribed safety equipment and practices. Enforces safety procedures implemented by the Company.
  • Communicates status of the project to the Project Manager.
  • Completes daily logs at the end of the day and submits them to the Project Engineer.
  • Consistently recommends to the Project Manager possible changes that could be made that may benefit the project.
  • Mentor Project staff and craft to assist in their development.
  • Handles conflicts between crew members.
  • Reports any violation of company policies and/or collective bargaining agreement to the Project Manager.
  • Recommends to upper management of disciplining employees and/or terminating employees.
  • In the absence of the Project Manager operates sites in accordance with company policies, work schedules and deadlines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Experience, and Technical Knowledge

  • Previous experience in heavy civil construction work or an equivalent preferred.
  • Sufficient oral and written skills to communicate effectively with employees and management.
  • Must have experience managing multiple field crews and training employees.
  • Must be knowledgeable knowledge of local, provincial/federal laws and regulations governing and/or affecting the construction industry.
  • Valid Driver's License to operate vehicles. Valid CDL is desired but not required.
  • Understands the different signals used to signal operators of construction machinery.
