Job Description

Department: Surgery
Reports To: Surgery Manager


SUMMARY
Plans, organizes, directs and controls the delivery of patient care in the operating room, same day surgery, post anesthesia recovery room or endoscopy suite. Provides nursing care through the process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Demonstrates environmental concerns of infection control practice, safety/fire practice, disaster practice, cardiac arrest practice, and continuous quality improvement. Provides direction to the development of all department personnel and maintains collaboration with support services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Reports to the Nurse Manager and works with patients, families, physicians, and other nursing employees.
  • Provides leadership and direction in accordance with the organizational and departmental goals and objectives.
  • Provides for professional growth and development through training programs and continuing education.
  • Prepares and documents the required records and reports in the EMR, charge system, pathology slips, etc.
  • Demonstrates the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in the delivery of nursing care to provide safe, effective, quality patient outcomes.
  • Assesses physical, psychological and sound dimensions of patients. Applies knowledge of illness, and injuries. Discusses and uses available resources in the assessment process.
  • Develops a plan of care and updates plan of care as necessary, based on continuing assessments of the patient in the EMR
  • Implements medical and technical affects of care and nursing orders in accordance with established policies and procedures. Intervenes with proper technique, procedure and safety precautions to meet individual needs of the patient.
  • Collaborates with other departments to provide coordinated patient centered care.
  • Respects the dignity and confidentiality of the patient, serving as an advocate as necessary, and providing a safe and secure environment for the patient cognizant of the Patient's Bill of Rights.
  • Directs and guides patient education, assessing patient needs, planning with the patient, implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of the education.
  • Directs and guides activities of ancillary personnel.
  • Demonstrates environmental concerns and knowledge of Infection Control, including adherence to Standard Precautions; Code Blue, Code Red, Code Pink, Code Orange, Manpower; Mechanical or natural disaster.
  • Performs High-Level Disinfection and Sterilization procedures according to both the manufacturer’s instructions and evidence-based guidelines.
  • Demonstrates a customer service approach in care and interactions with others. Participates in growth and self-development activities.
  • Performs within limits of State Nurses Practice Act, Code of Ethics for Nurses, hospital guidelines and procedure.
  • Communicates in a clear and articulate manner with colleagues, management, clients and staff.
  • Supports appropriate quality improvement programs and assesses/improves department performance.
  • Supports the policies and procedures of the organization and the standards of the Joint Commission as required for full accreditation.
  • Considers age-related factors in care, treatment, education, and evaluation of patients ranging from neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. Applies knowledge of age related factors appropriately in accordance with professional standards and departmental policies and procedures.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
In the Charge Nurse position directly supervise employees in the Surgical Department, consisting of scrub and circulating personnel working in the operating room, PACU, CSR and SDS settings.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Minimum: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BLS and ACLS certifications; PALS certification within the first 6 months of employment.
Preferred/Desired:One to three years of O.R. experience preferred, surgical tech experience desired.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Current RN License. BLS and ACLS certifications.


LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems; ability to deal with conflict in a diplomatic and understandable manner. Recognizes problems, considers relevant facts, identifies alternative solutions, and chooses the appropriate course of action. Ability to reason and formulate resolutions under pressure, and to consider best manner to communicate resolutions tactfully. Ability to understand and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form, and to determine and apply the appropriate concrete or variable instruction. Ability to maintain concentration and follow-through on tasks while receiving interruptions or multiple tasks/instructions at one time. Handles interruptions, maintains a high level of flexibility, and makes adjustments in work schedule.
