Job Description
The Lead Fiber Optic Service Technician is responsible for leading field installation and service activities while performing advanced troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, testing, and installation of electrical and fiber optic systems. This individual serves as the technical leader on job sites, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company standards and customer expectations.
The Lead Technician provides day-to-day direction to field technicians, oversees fiber installation, fusion splicing, testing, and documentation, and serves as the primary technical resource for complex service issues. While this role does not involve designing electrical or fiber systems, the Lead Technician identifies and reports design deficiencies and recommends solutions to improve system performance and reliability.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Lead field crews on fiber optic installation, service, maintenance, and repair projects.
- Independently install fiber optic cable in both Inside Plant (ISP) and Outside Plant (OSP) environments.
- Perform advanced fiber termination, fusion splicing, cable restoration, and connector installation.
- Conduct fiber testing, troubleshooting, and certification using OTDRs, light source/power meters, visual fault locators, and other industry-standard testing equipment.
- Install and maintain fiber enclosures, patch panels, splice cases, and related fiber infrastructure.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair electrical and fiber optic systems in the field.
- Read and interpret fiber optic drawings, splice diagrams, blueprints, electrical schematics, specifications, and project documentation.
- Coordinate daily job activities and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to project schedules.
- Mentor, train, and support Service Technicians and apprentice technicians in installation techniques, troubleshooting, and best practices.
- Perform quality control inspections to ensure installations meet company standards and customer specifications.
- Respond to emergency service requests and provide technical leadership during critical service events.
- Accurately complete service reports, testing documentation, material usage, and project closeout documentation.
- Communicate effectively with customers, project managers, supervisors, and other trades to ensure successful project execution.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and industry standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.
Education and/or ExperienceThe ideal candidate will have five or more years of experience in fiber optic installation, electrical service, telecommunications, or related field operations, including demonstrated leadership experience.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Extensive experience installing fiber optic cable in both Inside Plant (ISP) and Outside Plant (OSP) environments.
- Expert-level experience with fiber termination and fusion splicing.
- Advanced proficiency performing fiber testing and troubleshooting using OTDRs, light source/power meters, visual fault locators, and related equipment.
- Strong understanding of fiber optic installation standards and industry best practices.
- Experience installing and maintaining fiber enclosures, splice cases, patch panels, and related infrastructure.
- Ability to read and interpret fiber optic drawings, splice diagrams, electrical schematics, and construction documents.
- Experience leading crews and coordinating multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable building codes is preferred.
- Fiber optic certifications are preferred but not required.
- Completion of an accredited electrical apprenticeship program is a plus.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
The Lead Fiber Optic Service Technician is expected to:
- Independently lead fiber installation, fusion splicing, testing, troubleshooting, and restoration activities.
- Coordinate daily assignments and priorities for field technicians.
- Train and mentor less experienced technicians.
- Ensure quality workmanship through inspections and coaching.
- Assist project managers with scheduling, material planning, and project execution.
- Serve as the primary technical resource for complex installations and service calls.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
The successful candidate must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively lead field personnel, communicate with customers, and coordinate with project managers and subcontractors.
The ability to interpret technical manuals, project specifications, safety procedures, and construction documents is essential.
Mathematical SkillsBasic mathematical skills are required, including measurements, cable calculations, material quantities, and interpreting project dimensions.
Computer SkillsCandidates should be proficient using tablets, smartphones, and electronic work order systems for:
- Time entry
- Daily reporting
- Reviewing project drawings
- Recording fiber testing results
- Material tracking
- Project documentation
Experience with electronic field service management software is preferred.
Physical DemandsThe physical demands are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
The employee will regularly:
- Stand, walk, climb, kneel, crouch, crawl, and work in confined spaces.
- Work from ladders, aerial lifts, rooftops, and elevated structures.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier materials with assistance.
- Operate fiber splicing equipment, testing equipment, and hand and power tools.
- Perform repetitive hand movements requiring fine motor skills.
Specific vision requirements include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work EnvironmentThis is a field-based leadership position supporting commercial, industrial, telecommunications, and electrical service projects. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under varying weather conditions and may require travel between multiple job sites.
The position requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), adherence to OSHA regulations and company safety standards, and flexibility to work overtime, after-hours service calls, and emergency response situations as project needs dictate.
