Job Description:
Equipment Operator II – Water Services
The City of Chesapeake is looking for a skilled, dedicated professional to join our Water Services team as an Equipment Operator II. About The Role
As an essential part of our Water Services operations, you’ll use your technical knowledge and heavy‑equipment experience to help install, repair, and maintain the City’s water infrastructure. Your work supports reliable water service for residents and helps keep Chesapeake running smoothly.

What You’ll Do
• Operate heavy equipment including backhoes, dump trucks, tanker trucks, and vacuum trucks
• Install and repair water service lines and support water‑main repair activities
• Restore job sites by removing debris and repairing grass, concrete, and asphalt surfaces
• Complete required documentation and administrative tasks for assigned work

Required Qualifications:
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires completion of 10th grade in high school. High school diploma, GED OR specialized vocational training is preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standard, this class requires a minimum of six months of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required. Specialized certifications may be required based on department assigned.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to confined spaces. Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.


Preferred Qualifications:
Basic knowledge of pipe repair techniques and maintenance is preferred.

This position is located at 906 Executive Blvd. Chesapeake, VA.

Selected candidates will be eligible for $3,000 sign-on bonus and a $4,000 annual CDL Stipend (if applicable)!

This position is approved for a Voluntary Career Progression program that allows employees to be advanced to the appropriate next level position with their current division.

This position is deemed an Alpha position so you must have the ability to work in any emergency situations due to weather or operational issues. Must be available for inclement weather, mandatory standby duty, and overtime as needed.

In accordance with City policy, this position is deemed safety-sensitive. As such, applicants for this position are subject to pre-employment drug/alcohol testing after receiving a conditional offer of employment and may also be subject to random testing. This drug test includes testing for marijuana. Possession of a medical marijuana card will not excuse an applicant from the testing process; however, a test will not be considered positive for marijuana if a valid medical marijuana certification is presented unless the position requires a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or is a sworn law-enforcement officer/deputy.
