Position OverviewThe Joseph Moore Museum (JMM) at Earlham College seeks a full-time, early career museum professional for immediate hire. This position is a 1 year (50 week), grant-funded role with the possibility of a 1 year extension. Some evening and weekend hours will be required. This position will gain experience in most areas of museum operations with a particular focus in museum education. They will report to the museum faculty working primarily with the Curator of Education, but also assist the Director with limited operations, marketing and administrative activities. This role will need to be available during the summer to provide departmental coverage.
Primary Duties & ResponsibilitiesEducation and Museum Programs (50%)- Manage the day-to-day scheduling of student staff for the hosting, education, and animal care teams, filling in as needed
- Collaborate with the Curator of Education in teaching field trip programs for all ages in the museum (includes programs for pre-K through grade 12 as well as adult audiences). Programs and subjects include but are not limited to planetarium shows, live animal demonstrations, Indiana prehistory, the Ordovician period, Ancient Egypt, etc.
- Carry out daily maintenance of the exhibit museum, including resetting and restocking exhibits, identifying maintenance and repair needs, and submitting and tracking work orders to resolve issues
- Assist the Curator of Education with program development, research, and support
- Contribute to student training and assessment
- Represent the museum at both on and off campus events with students (i.e., Earth Day, Halloween in the park, library events, farmers market, EC involvement fair)
- Develop and oversee an evening program for campus and community (escape games, planetarium nights, study nights, etc.)
- Assist with planning and implementation of special events, including ordering, set-up and take-down
- Provide backup for hosting as needed including occasional weekends
- Coordinate the care of our live collections, overseeing, training, and scheduling the animal care student team; maintaining a schedule for cleaning the habitats; and coordinating with faculty for supply replenishment. This includes caring for reptiles and amphibians as well as live feeder crickets and a dubia roach colony. They are the primary person responsible for the health and care of our live animal ambassadors.
- Social media/marketing: regular (multiple times a week) social media posts and occasional newsletter and email communications to diverse audiences including the JMM and MUSE IG and FB accounts, mail chimp communications, etc.
- Giftshop: assist with restocking, merchandising, ordering inventory, maintaining our online shop and weekly deposits
- Administrative Duties: Provide general administrative support to the museum and museum studies program
- Data management: create, maintain and update accurate data sets for various reporting needs, including visitor statistics, marketing survey results, and student worker reflections and evaluations
- Actively participate in meetings, team planning and shared office operations
- Complete other duties as assigned
- A BA or BS in a related field
- Prior museum experience or other experience in informal education setting (camps,nature centers, etc.)
- Experience using digital tools and technology, Familiarity with Microsoft 365, graphic design and social media platforms
- Strong verbal, written, and facilitation skills
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and community partners
- Experience communicating with and supporting students from a wide range of backgrounds, identities, experiences, and career interests
- Clear understanding of, and affinity with, the mission and values of the Joseph Moore Museum as well as Earlham College
- Commitment to high visibility, accessibility, and engagement with students and the campus community
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast paced, student and community centered environment
- Ability to work evenings and weekends
