JOB SUMMARY:

The Surgical Clinical Reviewer (SCR) is responsible for the collection, abstraction, analysis, and submission of accurate and reliable clinical data to the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. Through high-quality data management and clinical review, this role supports ongoing efforts to improve surgical outcomes, enhance patient safety, and advance quality improvement initiatives across the organization.

The SCR works collaboratively with physicians, surgical leadership, residents, and multidisciplinary teams to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. This role also supports research efforts by assisting surgical residents and clinical teams with the development and implementation of quality improvement and patient safety projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree in a healthcare-related field required
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in a hospital surgery department, surgery clinic, clinical research, medical records, or related healthcare setting required
  • Clinical chart review and data abstraction experience required
  • Ability to successfully complete all required training modules and pass the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program certification examination
  • Experience with database entry and/or data management preferred
  • Basic statistical knowledge preferred
  • Quality improvement and/or patient safety experience preferred
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively across multiple disciplines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Clinical Data Collection & Management
  • Collect, review, abstract, and submit accurate clinical data for all eligible surgical cases to the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database
  • Ensure timely and complete documentation and data entry in accordance with established program guidelines and standards
  • Perform detailed chart reviews and validate clinical data for accuracy and completeness
  • Maintain data integrity and confidentiality in accordance with organizational and regulatory standards
Quality Improvement & Patient Safety
  • Collaborate with members of the Department of Surgery to identify opportunities for quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
  • Analyze clinical outcomes and data trends to support performance improvement efforts
  • Participate in development and implementation of quality initiatives designed to improve surgical outcomes and patient care delivery
  • Support ongoing monitoring and reporting of quality metrics and performance measures
Research & Educational Support
  • Assist surgical residents and clinical teams in identifying, developing, and initiating quality improvement and patient safety research projects
  • Provide support in gathering and interpreting clinical data for research and project initiatives
  • Contribute to presentations, reports, and educational materials as needed
Collaboration & Communication
  • Develop collaborative relationships with physicians, residents, administrators, students, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams
  • Communicate findings, trends, and recommendations effectively to clinical and administrative stakeholders
  • Interact professionally and courteously with all members of the surgical and healthcare team
Technology & Data Systems
  • Utilize electronic databases and software systems to maintain clinical data and reports
  • Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel; familiarity with PowerPoint and Access preferred
  • Support ongoing use and optimization of reporting tools and data management systems
WORKING CONDITIONS / ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  • Frequent interaction with physicians, residents, administrators, students, hospital personnel, and patients/families
  • Work is primarily performed in a clinical and office environment with extensive computer and database utilization
  • Requires strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines
