Job Description

Description:

Serving Arkansas with excellence for over 50 years, Klaasmeyer Construction Company is seeking a Safety Director to lead the safety function across our multi-state telecommunications construction operations. Based in Conway, Arkansas, and reporting directly to the CEO, the Safety Director is the company's primary safety authority — owning the design, implementation, and enforcement of all safety programs, policies, and training. This leader holds full stop-work authority on every company job site, including the mandate to remove any employee or subcontractor for safety non-compliance, with the full backing of Operations leadership. The Safety Director is accountable for regulatory compliance and OSHA response, incident management, workers' compensation outcomes, and reducing the company's Experience Modification Rate (EMR), while serving as a consistent, visible presence in the field and building a stronger, more disciplined safety culture throughout the organization.

Requirements:

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Own the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the company's comprehensive safety program across all field operations — aerial, underground, HDD, plow, blowing, splicing, and equipment operations on multi-state projects
  • Exercise full stop-work authority on all company job sites, including removing any employee or subcontractor from a work site for safety non-compliance
  • Serve as the company's primary authority on OSHA compliance — conducting proactive compliance reviews and representing the company in OSHA inspections, citations, and enforcement actions
  • Own compliance with customer-specific safety requirements and site access protocols, including data-center environments, and supply the safety documentation and prequalification submissions required for bids and customer onboarding
  • Develop, enforce, and maintain company safety policies, procedures, and the safety handbook to reflect current regulatory requirements and operational realities
  • Oversee DOT compliance — driver qualification files, hours of service, vehicle inspections, and the drug and alcohol testing program under 49 CFR Part 382
  • Lead post-accident and incident response company-wide — directing root cause analyses, implementing corrective actions, and responding on site to serious incidents, utility strikes, and injuries
  • Hold full accountability for workers' compensation claims outcomes, OSHA 300 and 300A recordkeeping, and timely return-to-work decisions
  • Deliver a monthly safety report to executive staff, set the annual EMR target with the CEO, and present the safety update at the weekly Executive Leadership Team meeting
  • Partner with Outside Counsel and Human Resources on safety-related legal matters, regulatory investigations, and policy development
  • Own new hire safety orientation and driver orientation, and design ongoing training in fall protection, confined space entry, aerial lift operation, hazard recognition, and emergency response
  • Build a field skills and competency check-off program with Construction leadership and the Director of Operations to document employee proficiency and support career advancement

What We Need From You

  • 7+ years of progressive construction safety experience; telecom, fiber, or utility construction strongly preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Construction Management, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered
  • Experience managing OSHA compliance, responding to citations, and leading incident investigations
  • Deep knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 construction standards; DOT and 49 CFR Part 382 experience preferred
  • OSHA 30 (Construction) required or obtained within 90 days; OSHA 500, CSP, or CHST preferred
  • Confined Space Entry, Aerial Lift, and Fall Protection certifications required (or obtained within 90 days of hire)
  • First Aid / CPR / AED certification required
  • Strong communicator with field crews and executive leadership alike; bilingual in Spanish a strong plus
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel regularly across multiple states

The Physical Reality

This is not a desk-only job. You will split your time between our Conway office and active job sites across our operating states, and field presence is a core part of the role. Expect to be on site in all kinds of weather, wearing PPE and walking the work alongside our crews.

  • Regular walking on uneven terrain and climbing during site inspections and audits
  • Wearing required PPE for extended periods in the field
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Regular multi-state driving and travel — covered per company travel policy
  • Periods of seated office work for reporting, documentation, and training prep

This is a safety-sensitive position subject to pre-employment and ongoing drug and alcohol testing per company policy.
