Executive Assistant to the City Manager

The Department

The City Manager’s Office is the organizational head of the City and is responsible for administering the policy goals of the City Council and coordinating high-quality, efficient City services to the community through all departments. This six-member office maintains a high ethos of service and responsiveness to the community. It is the hub for Council policy and programs, the community’s cultural vibrancy and citywide communications. The City Manager’s Office is a highly professional, dynamic environment focused on creative problem-solving and excellent results.

In addition to public communications, cultural arts, community special events management, and citywide coordination of policy and projects, the City Manager’s Office coordinates interagency activities and special projects with external organizations such as the San Diego Unified Port District, Coronado Unified School District, U.S. Navy, San Diego Association of Governments, Metropolitan Transit System, the County of San Diego, and all cities in the region. This office manages the City’s legislative program including coordination with state and federal regulators, the City’s legislative advocate, and the League of California Cities.


The Executive to the City Manager reports to the City Manager. This position provides highly responsible, confidential, and complex executive-level administrative support to the City Manager's Office, serving as a trusted staff member to the City Manager, Mayor, and City Council. The selected candidate will coordinate a wide range of administrative operations, manage executive calendars and meetings, prepare correspondence and City Council reports, oversee records management, and serve as a key liaison with City departments, elected officials, outside agencies, and the public. This position also coordinates special events, administers departmental payroll and accounts payable functions, and supports special projects requiring independent research, analysis, and sound judgment.

Success in this role requires exceptional organizational and communication skills, discretion in handling sensitive information, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. The selected candidate will exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment while ensuring compliance with City policies, maintaining accurate records, and delivering outstanding customer service to internal and external stakeholders.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Five (5) years of increasingly responsible professional-level administration or analytical experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required. Experience in a government setting with elected and appointed officials is highly desirable.

Education/Training: Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in business administration, public administration, communications, or a related field.

Examination & Selection Process

Application Review Phase: A completed City of Coronado employment application, cover letter, and resume must be submitted to the Human Resources Division by August 24, 2026. Applications will be evaluated based on relevant education, training, and experience.

Examination Phase: Applicants who are considered most qualified will be invited to participate in a panel interview (100%). Additionally, applicants may be requested to undertake one of the following exercises – written assessment, practical, or presentation – as part of the examination process.

Department Interview: Top candidates from the panel interview will be invited to a final interview with the Interim Deputy City Manager and the City Manager.

Candidate Selection: The selected candidate will receive a conditional offer of employment, contingent upon successful completion of a Live Scan background check and medical examination.

Additional Information: All candidates who achieve a score of 70% or higher in each phase of the examination process will be placed on an eligibility list for a minimum of six months. The City of Coronado participates in E-Verify, and all new employees are required to provide verification of their legal right to work in the United States.   • A rich benefits package contributes to the total compensation value. Benefits include a monthly cafeteria allotment of $2,168 voluntary retirement savings/deferred compensation, tuition reimbursement, group term life, short-term and long-term disability coverage, an employee assistance program, and more.
  • The Retirement Benefit Formula for Classic CalPERS hired prior to January 1, 2013, is Members is 3% at 60. The current employee contribution rate is 9.5%.
  • The Retirement Benefit Formula for PEPRA CalPERS Members, hired after January 1, 2013, is 2% at 62. The current employee contribution rate is 7.50%.
  • As part of ensuring our employees maintain a work/life balance, employees earn 144 hours of Annual Leave per year for the first 5 years. After 5 years, the accrual rate increases.
  • The City provides Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance in an amount equal to a one-time annual salary or $50,000, whichever is greater, at no cost to the employee.
  • The City provides short- and long-term disability insurance equal to 66 2/3% of income. Employees that earn over the maximum benefit of $5,000/month available under the long-term disability plan, have the option to purchase enhanced long-term disability insurance.
  • The City provides up to $2,000 per fiscal year for reimbursement of directly related costs of tuition, school fees, books, and required materials for approved courses and professional development opportunities. Student Loan Repayment can be used under this benefit.
  • Longevity Pay; bonus at 10 years and every 5 years after.
  • Lateral Vacation Service Credit, effective January 1, 2023, employees shall be given credit for prior verifiable public service employment for annual leave accrual rates.
