As an AI Backend Engineer Intern, you will contribute to the development, improvement, and reliability of intelligent backend systems. You will collaborate with engineering teams to build scalable AI features, improve system quality, and optimize user-facing experiences through thoughtful engineering practices.
- Build and enhance components of AI agent runtime systems, including intent routing, query rewriting, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), FAQ answering, and tool or skill orchestration workflows.
- Extend backend tool services by developing and optimizing integrations such as web search, market data services, and reporting APIs.
- Create evaluation datasets and testing frameworks to measure intent accuracy, response quality, and system performance.
- Improve system observability through tracing, metrics, logging, dashboards, and production monitoring.
- Debug and resolve issues across AI pipelines, including routing problems, skill loading challenges, and guardrail-related issues.
- Develop integration tests using mock environments and replay-based testing approaches.
- Follow engineering best practices including clean coding standards, code reviews, CI workflows, and documentation.
- Collaborate with experienced backend, data science, and algorithm engineers to deliver production-ready AI features.
The ideal candidate is a technically curious and proactive learner with a strong foundation in backend development and an interest in AI-powered applications. You should be comfortable working in collaborative engineering environments and eager to continuously improve your skills.
- Currently pursuing a university degree or recently graduated in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related technical field.
- Strong proficiency in Python with experience writing clean, maintainable, and well-structured code.
- Understanding of backend development concepts, service architectures, testing practices, and software engineering workflows.
- Familiarity with large language model (LLM) application concepts, including prompting, RAG, tool/function calling, or AI agent frameworks through academic projects, internships, or personal work.
- Ability to reason about software correctness, write effective tests, and troubleshoot issues across asynchronous systems and services.
- Availability for a sustained internship period with a willingness to learn quickly and iterate based on feedback.
- Experience with AI agent frameworks such as AgentScope, LangChain, LlamaIndex, or similar technologies is a plus.
- Knowledge of vector databases, embeddings, evaluation frameworks, LLM observability tools, or AI safety practices is beneficial.
- Exposure to technologies such as Kafka, Redis, object storage systems, Docker, Kubernetes, or configuration management platforms is an advantage.
- Strong analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and enthusiasm for emerging AI technologies.
