Database Administrator

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Database Administrator based in the United States.

This role offers the opportunity to play a critical part in a large-scale data migration initiative supporting a federal healthcare program.
You will take ownership of database health, security, availability, and performance across both on-premises and AWS-hosted environments.
From provisioning and configuration to migration, performance tuning, backup, and recovery, you will contribute across the full database lifecycle.
You will work closely with developers, analysts, and business stakeholders to ensure data is transferred accurately, securely, and efficiently.
The role combines hands-on database administration with cloud infrastructure expertise and complex troubleshooting.
Your work will help maintain reliable data systems while supporting modernization efforts that ultimately improve services for Veterans.

Accountabilities
  • Administer, maintain, and optimize production and non-production databases supporting an extended, large-scale data migration initiative.
  • Perform database installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, maintenance, and performance tuning across source and target environments.
  • Monitor database health, availability, capacity, and performance while proactively identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving technical issues.
  • Manage database backup, recovery, replication, and disaster recovery processes to safeguard data integrity and business continuity.
  • Implement and maintain database security controls, including access management, encryption, auditing, and other security best practices.
  • Provision, configure, monitor, scale, and optimize AWS-hosted database resources, including RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, and EC2-hosted databases.
  • Support data conversion activities, including schema design, data loading, validation, troubleshooting, and migration testing.
  • Collaborate with developers, data analysts, and business analysts to support API-driven data exchange and integration between systems.
  • Test and validate migrated data to ensure completeness, accuracy, integrity, and consistency across source and target environments.
  • Develop and maintain clear technical documentation covering database standards, configurations, migration procedures, operational practices, and lessons learned.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of database infrastructure, migration processes, automation, and operational reliability.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related technical field.
  • 6+ years of professional experience as a Database Administrator, including substantial hands-on experience supporting data migration projects.
  • Strong experience administering relational database platforms such as SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, or MySQL.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS database and infrastructure services, including RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, and EC2-hosted databases.
  • Working proficiency in SQL and scripting languages such as Python, Shell, or similar technologies for automation, data conversion, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with database backup and recovery, replication, high availability, and disaster recovery configurations.
  • Strong understanding of database security principles, including access controls, encryption, auditing, and data protection.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently diagnose and resolve complex database and infrastructure issues.
  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to create clear technical documentation for both technical and business audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with developers, analysts, business stakeholders, and other technical teams.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment while maintaining strong communication and accountability.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Minimum Background Investigation (MBI) suitability determination.
  • Must reside in the United States.
  • Preferred qualifications include AWS certifications such as AWS Certified Database – Specialty, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, or AWS Certified SysOps Administrator.
  • Experience supporting Department of Veterans Affairs or other federal government data migration initiatives is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with the Empower platform and/or VA systems is a plus.
  • Experience with ETL tools, data integration and transformation platforms, infrastructure-as-code technologies such as Terraform or AWS CloudFormation, and large-scale system migration projects is preferred.
  • Previous experience serving as a senior or lead database administrator on complex migration programs is an advantage.
