TitleTenure-Track or Tenured Professor in Ukrainian Studies
SchoolFaculty of Arts and Sciences
Department/AreaSlavic Languages and Literatures
Position Description
The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures plans to appoint a tenure-track or tenured professor in Ukrainian philology and culture. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2027. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including first-year seminars, survey courses, and advanced seminars. We are seeking an energetic colleague committed to supporting and building our program in Ukrainian studies, introducing undergraduates to the study of this part of the world, advising advanced work with graduate students, and connecting Ukrainian studies to other disciplines and regions in creative ways. We expect the candidate to share fully in the Department’s administrative and advising duties as well as participating broadly in the academic culture of the university. Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching and innovative scholarship is imperative.

We understand philology in a broad sense of the term, as an overlap between the study of language and culture. The ideal candidate will be able to present Ukraine’s complex, multiethnic culture and history to both undergraduates and graduate students. Knowledge of a related field or of another Slavic language and culture is highly desirable. We also welcome broader interdisciplinary skills that bring together fields such as linguistics, cultural studies, literary studies, medieval studies, Jewish studies, history, anthropology, music, film, theater, and the visual arts.

In Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, tenure-track positions are untenured. External applicants and finalists considered for a tenured appointment will need to complete the same procedures as external applicants and finalists in a search designated specifically for a tenured appointment.
Basic Qualifications
Ph.D. required by the time the appointment begins. Native or near-native Ukrainian and fluency in English are required.
Additional Qualifications
Demonstrated excellence in research and teaching is required.
Special Instructions
All materials should be submitted by September 15, 2026.
1. Cover letter
2. Curriculum vitae
3. Research statement (500 words)
4. Teaching/advising statement describing the candidate’s philosophy and practices as well as their approach to creating a learning environment in which students are encouraged to ask questions and share their ideas (500 words)
5. Service statement that describes efforts to strengthen academic communities (e.g., the candidate’s department, institution, and/or professional societies) (500 words)
6. Sample of scholarship, approximately 25 pp.
7. References

Candidates for a tenure-track position are required to submit names and contact information of 3 referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when the three letters have been received. At least one letter must come from someone who has not served as the candidate’s undergraduate thesis advisor, chair of the dissertation committee, or primary advisor in a postdoctoral fellowship.

Candidates for a tenured position need not submit reference letters at this stage; simply skip the reference page of the application.

8. The authorization to release information to Harvard must be provided as part of the application process in ARIeS and signed by all candidates for a tenured position.
