About the Skyway

Built by the City of Chicago in 1958, the Chicago Skyway Toll Bridge (“Skyway”) is a 7.8-mile toll road connecting the Indiana Toll Road to the Dan Ryan Expressway on Chicago’s South Side.

A key feature of the Skyway is the half-mile-long steel truss “High Bridge,” which spans the Calumet River and Calumet Harbor—an important route for industrial shipping. The bridge’s main span is 650 feet long and provides 125 feet of vertical clearance.

Position Summary:

The Lead Mechanic/Equipment Operator Labor (LM/EOL) is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing heavy equipment and vehicles used in toll operations and emergency response. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to DOT regulations, including mandatory drug and alcohol testing in accordance with 49 CFR Part 40.

The LM/EOL diagnoses the nature of malfunctions of various types of automobiles, vans, light duty trucks, heavy equipment and other related equipment. Employee determines the type and extent of repair necessary and performs work as required. Employee reports directly and is accountable to the Roadway Supervisors. Equipment Operator Laborer Duties are performed a=on an as need basis and/or when no mechanical work is needed to be performed.

Essential Functions (Duties and Responsibilities)

Required to work 12-hour shifts if requiredRequired to be on-call and available during snow events.Required to make road calls for emergency repairs.Required to do gas and electric welding.Diagnose automotive, truck and heavy equipment malfunctions.Maintain inventory control and other records.Monthly Dip stick fluids to determine monthly usage Complete engine, transmission or front suspension overhaul.Replace or repairs major engine, transmission, differential, suspension or electrical components.Perform routine preventative work.Install automobile, truck and heavy equipment accessories, such as oil and air filters, windshield wiper blades, fan belts, and batteries.Modifies equipment for additional equipment to be used.Perform diagnosis of mechanical or electrical breakdowns and makes necessary adjustments and repairs such as replacing fuel pumps, replacing gaskets, replacing exhaust system, repairing or replacing brake drums, linings, and brake fluid, etc.Maintain service records for work completed.Perform work directly related to that of an Equipment Operator / Laborer as required, which includes but is not limited to, snow removal, pothole patching, crack sealing, mowing, trash removal and other maintenance related duties. Perform other duties as required.Work closely with VendorsOrder parts through concurWork closely with Administrative Assistant with the ordering/receiving of parts Must possess own tool that are not covered by SCC [JM1] Works closely with secondary mechanic to assure that all work is performed correctly Other duties as assigned by management

Qualifications:

High school diploma/ GEDExtensive knowledge of automobile, truck and heavy equipment functions, systems and repairs.Extensive knowledge of auto, truck and heavy equipment repair procedures and repair materials and tools used in auto repair.Practical knowledge of appropriate safety precautions.Ability to use sophisticated electronic diagnostic equipment, repair manuals and parts catalogues.Ability to use suspension alignment equipment.Ability to trouble shoot electrical problems.Ability to communicate with parts stores when calling on parts.Must always maintain a clean and organized work area.Advanced education, training, or professional certificationsAdditional experience or specialized skills beyond the minimum requirementsMicrosoft Excel and basic office computer skills.

Possess CDL class B at a minimum with air brake endorsement Advanced training and competencies that enhance job performance.Experience with process improvement, cross-functional collaboration, or industry-specific toolsKnowledge of equipment and ability to obtain knowledge of roadway activities to be performed on an as-needed basis and/or emergencies.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

This position operates in a Garage facility and in the field environment. While performing the duties of this role, the employee is regularly required to communicate, sit, stand, and use standard office equipment.

This role may also involve occasional lifting to [75 pounds], walking, or exposure to outdoor conditions, depending on operational needs.Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Willing to work more than 8 hours a day if needed and occasionally required to lift automobile parts and equipment weighing from 20-75 pounds and frequently works in uncomfortable or cramped conditions.
