This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Mortgage Underwriter based in India.
This is a remote opportunity at the intersection of mortgage underwriting, fintech, and AI-powered lending technology.
You will apply your underwriting expertise to continuously test and improve digital mortgage products used to support lending decisions.
The role combines hands-on analysis of borrower documentation with product testing, quality validation, and subject matter expertise.
You’ll work extensively with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, and VA guidelines to ensure underwriting logic is accurate and compliant.
Your insights will directly influence product enhancements, new features, and the reliability of automated underwriting workflows.
You’ll collaborate closely with Product, Sales, and other cross-functional stakeholders in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment.

- Apply advanced knowledge of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, and VA underwriting guidelines to test and validate mortgage underwriting products and workflows.
- Review borrower documentation, including W-2s, tax returns, pay stubs, self-employment income documentation, assets, credit reports, appraisals, title documentation, and AUS findings.
- Analyze income, assets, credit, collateral, and automated underwriting findings to determine whether underwriting rules are being applied accurately.
- Validate automated income calculations and other product outputs against applicable agency and investor requirements.
- Document test cases, results, discrepancies, and recommendations clearly and thoroughly.
- Identify product or underwriting logic gaps and provide actionable recommendations to improve accuracy, compliance, and usability.
- Act as a mortgage underwriting subject matter expert, translating complex guidelines and requirements into clear explanations for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Partner closely with Product teams to identify enhancement opportunities and contribute underwriting expertise to new feature development.
- Provide ongoing subject matter expertise to Sales teams and support accurate communication of product capabilities.
- Communicate testing outcomes, risks, and recommendations effectively to leadership and cross-functional teams.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of mortgage technology products and automated underwriting workflows.
- 3+ years of professional mortgage underwriting experience, with strong exposure to FHA and VA loans.
- Strong knowledge of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, and VA underwriting guidelines and their practical application.
- Hands-on experience reviewing and interpreting borrower documentation, including W-2s, tax returns, pay stubs, self-employed income, assets, appraisals, title documents, credit information, and AUS findings.
- Strong expertise in income analysis, credit evaluation, collateral review, and automated underwriting systems.
- Ability to identify discrepancies between expected underwriting outcomes and technology-generated results.
- Experience testing mortgage technology products, software, or automated underwriting tools is highly desirable.
- Strong technical aptitude and the ability to understand, critique, and explain mortgage software functionality.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex underwriting concepts into clear, practical language.
- Strong documentation, organization, prioritization, and analytical skills.
- Experience working with fintech or SaaS-based mortgage platforms is a plus.
- Familiarity with automated income calculation or income verification solutions is advantageous.
- Exposure to Agile product development environments and cross-functional technology teams is preferred.
- Ability to work effectively during a fixed 6:00 PM to 3:00 AM IST schedule.
