CNC Utility Job Description

Position Summary: The CNC Utility position supports daily CNC machining operations by assisting machinists and operators with material handling, machine preparation, part movement, deburring, cleaning, inspection support, and general shop organization. This role helps ensure production runs efficiently, safely, and according to quality standards while providing hands-on support across the CNC department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support CNC machinists and operators with setup preparation, material staging, tool organization, and part movement.
  • Load, unload, and move raw materials, work-in-process, and finished parts safely and accurately.
  • Perform basic secondary operations such as deburring, cleaning, washing, labeling, packaging, and visual checks of parts.
  • Assist with machine tending activities as directed, including removing completed parts and preparing the next operation.
  • Use basic measuring tools, such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, or inspection fixtures, to support quality checks when trained.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas, machines, tooling, carts, and material storage locations.
  • Remove chips, scrap, and coolant as needed and assist with routine machine upkeep, including fluid checks and housekeeping.
  • Follow work instructions, job travelers, routers, production schedules, and verbal direction from leads or supervisors.
  • Identify and communicate production issues, material shortages, quality concerns, or safety hazards promptly.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment and safe material-handling practices.
  • Assist with continuous improvement, 5S, and workflow organization activities within the CNC department.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support production needs.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous experience in manufacturing, machining, assembly, warehouse, or material handling preferred.
  • Basic understanding of blueprint reading, part identification, and inspection requirements required.
  • Familiarity with CNC mills, lathes, machining centers, tooling, fixtures, and shop terminology preferred.
  • Experience with deburring tools, hand tools, air tools, parts washers, or packaging equipment preferred.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn CNC machining processes.
  • Ability to read job travelers, part labels, basic work instructions, and production documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Reliable attendance and ability to work scheduled shifts, overtime, or weekends as needed.
  • Experience operating forklifts, pallet jacks, cranes, hoists, or other material-handling equipment preferred.
  • Knowledge of 5S, lean manufacturing, and safe work practices preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform repetitive motions throughout the shift.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull materials and parts as required by the role, with assistance or equipment when appropriate.
  • Ability to work around machinery, coolant, metal chips, sharp edges, and moderate shop noise.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and safety shoes.
