About the Role:
The Staff Accountant plays a critical role in maintaining accurate financial records and supporting timely financial reporting. This position prepares journal entries, reconciles balance sheet and subledger accounts, performs month-end close activities, and assists with financial statement preparation and variance analysis. The role requires working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), sound analytical judgment, and meticulous attention to detail to investigate discrepancies and ensure transactions are recorded completely and accurately. The successful candidate collaborates with procurement, operations, and finance and supports internal controls, audits, and process improvements. Ultimately, this role helps ensure the integrity, accuracy, and reliability of the company's financial information.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- At least 2-4 years of accounting experience, including general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and month-end close.
- Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal controls.
- Proficiency with accounting software (QuickBooks, Concur) and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively.
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPA certification or active progress toward CPA certification.
- Experience with ERP systems (Quickbooks), financial reporting, audits, and process improvement.
Responsibilities:
- General Ledger Accounting: Prepare and post journal entries with appropriate support and ensure transactions are recorded in the correct period.
- Month-End Close: Complete assigned monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities, including accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, and close schedules.
- Account Reconciliations: Prepare balance sheet, bank, and subledger reconciliations and resolve reconciling items promptly.
- Financial Reporting and Analysis: Assist with financial statements, management reports, and budget-to-actual variance explanations.
- AP and Expense Accounting: Review invoices, employee expenses, account coding, approvals, and AP accruals for accuracy and completeness.
- Compliance and Tax Support: Assist with 1099, sales and use tax, and other regulatory reporting in accordance with company policies and external audit support.
- Process Improvement and Ad Hoc Analysis: Prepare reports, support accounting system improvements, and participate in special finance projects.
Skills:
The required skills such as knowledge of GAAP, proficiency in accounting software, and advanced Excel are essential for preparing accurate journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reports. Analytical judgment and attention to detail support timely resolution of account variances and a complete month-end close. Time management and organizational skills are used daily to manage recurring deadlines, audit requests, and ad hoc projects. Preferred skills such as ERP experience and progress toward CPA certification enhance the ability to evaluate transactions and improve accounting processes. Strong communication skills facilitate collaboration with internal stakeholders and external auditors.
