Description:

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works with the Director on planning, organizing and directing Laboratory Services operations and ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.
  • Monitors, generates reports, and provides follow-up to nursing departments for Point of Care testing to assure compliance.
  • Creates and maintains staff schedules, shifts staff to accommodate work load or as needs arise.
  • Assists with the department’s in-service and training.
  • Assists with the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of performance improvement (PI) and CQI activities.
  • Assists with new method implementation and policy development
  • Assists with LIS build, maintenance and problem resolution.
  • Assists with proficiency testing result evaluation and corrective action documentation.
  • Recommends and assists with employee counseling and subsequent documentation
  • Responsible for the phlebotomy team’s problem resolution and reference lab issues.
  • Produces quality lab results while following department policies.
  • Has proper knowledge of laboratory equipment and is able to program and process according to department policies and manufacturer safety guidelines.
  • Produces quality lab results while following department policies.
  • Uses the proper procedure for completing worksheets and documenting critical values.
  • Able to detect spurious or abnormal results and follow investigative steps to determine if rejection/recollection is needed.
  • Demonstrates ability to investigate and resolve various instrument codes, utilizing appropriate resources to assure accurate patient test results.
  • Maintains competency in all assigned areas of the laboratory.
Requirements:

Regulatory Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree obtained from an accredited program in Medical Technology (MT) or Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) (or CLIA equivalent)
  • Master’s degree in Laboratory Technology, Business Administration or Healthcare Management preferred
  • Supervisor Licensed in the State of Florida in all five clinical areas (Microbiology, Serology/Immunology, Clinical Chemistry, Hematology and Immunohematology)
  • MT/MLS Certified (Generalist) by ASCP, AMT, or AAB.

  • Understands how to utilize the grievance process to resolve concerns.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.

  • Demonstrates basic computer skills and knowledge consistent with the needs of their department.

Safety/Environment

  • Knows the limitations of their license/certifications and does not practice outside these limitations.
  • Maintains cleanliness of equipment and department
  • Responsible for the safe handling of equipment as well as maintaining safety for themselves.
  • Knows the proper procedure for calling codes and the proper response for each code according to department protocol (i.e. fire, lock down, infant abduction, bomb threat, etc.)
  • Knows the proper procedure for reporting incidents involving the patient, visitor or employee.
  • Knows where to find SDS information when needed.
  • Is aware of hazards and hazardous materials and how to maintain a safe environment.
