THE OPPORTUNITY
BGF Industries is seeking an Assistant R&D Lab Manager to provide hands-on technical support to laboratory professionals in the lab, at manufacturing plants, and in the field. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys laboratory testing, mechanical problem-solving, developmental sample preparation, equipment operation, and working directly with technical materials and processes. The position is located in Danville, Virginia, with travel to Altavista as needed.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Set up and conduct laboratory and field tests, analyses, and evaluations in support of R&D programs.
- Perform assigned analytical and testing work independently and accurately document results.
- Record observations and data, maintain appropriate databases, and prepare reports, charts, and supporting documentation.
- Prepare lab-scale developmental samples for customer evaluation.
- Operate, maintain, calibrate, and when necessary assist with repair of laboratory equipment.
- Provide mechanical support for experimental programs and assist with computations, drawings, and technical reports.
- Support special research and quality-control testing, including evaluations related to color, durability, washability, wearability, and flammability.
- Maintain high standards for safety, health, housekeeping, and laboratory readiness.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- Associate of Science degree or two years of additional vocational/technical school training required.
- Mechanical aptitude and practical mechanical skills required.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs required.
- Four-year degree in a technical field preferred.
- Previous laboratory experience or experience with composites, nonwovens, and/or technical textiles preferred.
- Ability to work safely with laboratory chemicals, equipment, and required personal protective equipment.
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including lifting up to 50 pounds independently and using required eye, hearing, foot, and pulmonary protection when applicable.

You will work with a wide range of materials and technologies, including industrial yarns and fabrics, composite-related processes, FTIR, thermal analysis, SEM, electrical testing, and other laboratory equipment. The role offers a strong mix of hands-on testing, product development support, troubleshooting, and exposure to manufacturing applications.
This position requires access to information or technology that is subject to U.S. export control laws, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Pursuant to these regulations, only U.S. Persons (U.S. Citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents/Green Card holders) are eligible for this role. Proof of U.S. Person status will be required prior to employment.
