Department Overview

Cook 1 positions prepare simple foods according to standardized menus, recipes, or verbal instructions given by supervisor; makes salads, dressings, gelatin, toast, or sandwiches; grills sandwiches, burgers, bacon, pancakes, eggs, French toast, and hash browns and toast; cleans, cuts, and chops vegetables and fruits; slices meats, cheeses, and breads; cuts desserts; adjusts recipe quantities to eliminate excessive waste of food products; fills drink machines, mixes beverages, makes coffee, and prepares sack lunches or snacks; uses various types of commercial kitchen equipment such as mixers, slicers, and choppers; prepares simple desserts such as pudding, cobbler, and loaf cakes; slices and wraps bread and other baked items; checks for proper temperature of prepared foods with thermometer; observes food to be sure it is visually appealing and of high quality. Cleans various equipment and work stations, cleans drawers, utensils. Adheres to sanitation and food safety standards. Interacts with customers and fellow employees in a professional courteous manner.

Additionally, you may transport food back and forth from the kitchen to the cafes, clean tables, mop floors, stock utensils, cups and beverages. Serve food from steam tables, fill 5 gallon buckets of ice for the soda machines, lift 30-50lb boxes of soda syrup and clean equipment.

Function/Duties of Position

Food Preparation:

  • Prepares simple foods according to standardized menus, recipes, or verbal instructions given by supervisor; makes salads, dressings, gelatin, toast, or sandwiches; grills sandwiches, pancakes, eggs, French toast, and hash browns and toast; cleans, cuts, and chops vegetables and fruits; slices meats, cheeses, and breads; cuts desserts; adjusts recipe quantities to eliminate excessive waste of food products; fills drink machines, mixes beverages, makes coffee, and prepares sack lunches or snacks; uses various types of commercial kitchen equipment such as mixers, slicers, and choppers; prepares simple desserts such as pudding, cobbler, and loaf cakes; slices and wraps bread and other baked items; checks for proper temperature of prepared foods with thermometer; observes food to be sure it is visually appealing and of high quality.

Sanitation Activities:

  • Cleans sinks, counters, fountains, and serving area; sweeps and mops floors; wipes spills; collects and removes trash; replaces trash-can liners; sorts and stacks dishes, glasses, and utensils; stack clean dishware; and clean coffee pots, blenders, pop machine dispensers, ice cream maker, hot chocolate machines, and other commercial equipment.

Line Server Activities:

  • Serve food items quickly and efficiently on the serving line; prepares coffee and other drinks; maintains adequate supplies of dishes, cups, flatware, and napkins for the serving line and setting up and refilling condiments, dispensers, and food pans. Helps customers and communicates with cook on line replenishment.

Other Duties as Assigned


Required Qualifications
  • An OR food handlers card or equivalent; AND
  • Food Protection Manager Certification with 6 months of hire; AND
  • Two years of experience as a cook in a commercial food service facility; OR
  • Possession of a Certificate of Completion in culinary arts and/or Foods and Hospitality Service from a certified community college or technical school.
  • Food handlers' card or SERV safe certificate obtained by hire date.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Basic knowledge of therapeutic diets.
  • Ability in checking trays to ensure diet cards have been accurately followed.
  • Good understanding of Math, Customer Service, Cleanliness and Food handling skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED certificate
  • ServSafe certificate

Additional Details
  • Exposure to loud noise, heat, grease, cold
  • Continuous standing, moving, bending, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, pulling, and twisting. Works with deep fat fryers, grill, sauté, and various other kitchen equipment.
