Job Description
CAD Designer
Position Summary
- The CAD Designer is responsible for preparing civil engineering construction plans and supporting design production for land development, infrastructure, utility, grading, drainage, and roadway projects. This role requires a working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D, plan production, design coordination, and company CAD standards.
- The CAD Designer works with Engineers, Project Managers, Senior CAD Designers, and other technical staff to transform design concepts, survey information, and engineering direction into complete and coordinated construction documents.
Primary Responsibilities
- Prepare civil engineering construction plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Develop and maintain drawings for site plans, paving and grading plans, drainage plans, utility plans, erosion control plans, roadway plans, and construction details.
- Use Civil 3D tools to create and edit alignments, profiles, surfaces, corridors, pipe networks, feature lines, parcels, labels, and plan production sheets.
- Interpret survey data, engineering sketches, redlines, and design direction.
- Coordinate with Engineers and Project Managers to resolve design and drafting issues.
- Apply company CAD standards, Civil 3D styles, layer standards, plotting standards, and plan presentation requirements.
- Prepare plan sets for internal review, client review, permitting, bidding, and construction.
- Review drawings for consistency, clarity, labeling accuracy, and sheet-to-sheet coordination.
- Assist with design calculations, quantity takeoffs, exhibits, and permit-related graphics.
- Coordinate xrefs, data shortcuts, sheet layouts, plotting, and file organization.
- Support entry-level CAD staff by answering basic questions and reviewing simple drafting work when needed.
Typical Tasks
- Creating proposed site layout sheets.
- Building grading surfaces and proposed contours.
- Drafting storm drainage, water, sewer, and roadway plans.
- Preparing plan and profile sheets.
- Creating details, sections, and construction notes.
- Updating plans based on agency comments.
- Coordinating design changes across multiple sheets.
- Preparing exhibits for clients, meetings, permitting, or construction coordination.
- Checking plans for drafting consistency and completeness.
Required Qualifications
- Proficiency with AutoCAD.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Ability to prepare civil engineering plan sheets with limited supervision.
- Understanding of civil plan production and construction document organization.
- Ability to read survey base files, engineering redlines, and civil construction plans.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to check own work.
- Good communication skills with engineers, project managers, and other CAD staff.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with land development, site design, grading, utilities, stormwater, roadway, or subdivision plans.
- Familiarity with local government permitting requirements and construction plan standards.
- Experience with Civil 3D surfaces, pipe networks, alignments, profiles, feature lines, parcels, and data shortcuts.
- Ability to identify potential design conflicts and communicate them clearly.
- Experience preparing complete plan sets from early design through permit revisions.
- Familiarity with external references, sheet set manager, plotting standards, and CAD production workflows.
Experience Level
- 2–6 years of civil CAD design or drafting experience.
- May vary depending on technical ability and Civil 3D proficiency.
