About This Position

Recreational Coach

Overtown Youth Center (OYC) is seeking an energetic and passionate Recreational Coach to help teach and model sportsmanship while guiding students through physical activities and recreational sports. This position offers the opportunity to inspire youth, promote a healthy lifestyle, and foster positive relationships while encouraging the development of valuable life skills.

What You Will Do:

  • Instill respect for the game, opponents, officials, teammates, and oneself through structured activities and discussions.
  • Lead students in lessons covering physical activity, nutrition, and recreation while emphasizing the importance of fitness.
  • Use positive reinforcement and the 4:1 "Rule of Thumb" (5 positives for each correction) to motivate and guide students.
  • Ensure that all equipment and recreational spaces are well-maintained and secure.
  • Develop engaging and informative lesson plans tailored to your specific activities.
  • Facilitate inclusive environments where all students are actively participating, particularly in PACERS activities.
  • Take advantage of teachable moments to reinforce lessons on respect, sportsmanship, and healthy competition.
  • Explain and enforce safety rules, creating a safe and engaging environment for all participants.

What We're Looking For:

  • 1-3 years of experience in youth programs, particularly in coaching or recreational instruction.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to manage diverse groups of students.
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs and work flexible hours, including weekends.
  • Comfortable with moderate physical activity and capable of lifting objects up to 25 pounds.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and pass a drug screening and Level 2 background check.
