About This Position
WWTP Operator I: Participates in training and skill building to gain skills and knowledge. Assists Wastewater Treatment Plant personnel of a higher classification in operating and maintaining motors, pumps, aerators, clarifiers, filter press, incinerator, blowers and related equipment used in wastewater and sludge treatment systems. Operates valves and gates; starts and stops motors, pumps, engines and generators to control and adjust flow and treatment processes, as directed. Collects samples and performs routine laboratory analysis. Cleaning, paints and maintains wastewater treatment plant buildings, facilities and grounds. Assists in inspecting, servicing and adjusting machinery. Provides instruction and training to summer and new employees as directed.
WWTP Operator II: Plant Operator: Operates, inspects and adjusts motors, aerators, clarifiers, pumps, filter press, blowers, chlorine tanks and related mechanical equipment; monitors and records necessary operational data and reports problems to supervisor; hoses down and cleans up tanks, equipment and structures; pumps scum pits.
Routine Operations: Checks and assists the Wastewater Systems Equipment Technician to construct, rebuild, and maintain treatment plant and sewage pump stations; cleans pump, pulls defective pumps and rebuilds. Hoses wet wells, cleans motor control panels, lubes pumps and drive lines and monitors pump hours. Checks lift stations, including SCCC, according to departmental policies and procedures. Complies with safety regulations and emergency procedures and planning as detailed in departmental policies and procedures.
Laboratory Operator: Collects samples, calibrates meters and performs laboratory tests; analyzes test results using calculator and computer; enters data into computer to produce monitoring and process control reports required by state and federal agencies; disseminates test results for process control changes; cleans up apparatus and laboratory.
Solids Operator: Collects samples and runs bench test to determine polymer sludge mixture for the day’s operation; operates, monitors and adjusts sludge feed pump, intensifier and hydraulic plate shifter to properly de-water sludge and spread load into landfill truck for disposal; cleans floor and drain after each mixture; takes samples of sludge mixture and sends to the laboratory for testing.
The following are the minimum requirements that must be met to be considered for the position of Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I, HS graduate or GED, valid driver’s license with no serious or frequent violations, current first aid/CPR certification and possession Washington state Group 1 certification. Wastewater Operator Certification within 18 months of employment. Operator I includes 2 years’ Experience in a Wastewater Treatment Plant and be able to obtain Group II Certificate within 18 months of hire or reclassification.
Operator II includes 4 years’ experience in wastewater plant operation and maintenance, of which 2 years is in the operation of an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant and Washington State Wastewater Certificate Group II.
