Job Description

CAD / Mechanical Design Writer - Engineering FRQ

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a CAD / Mechanical Design Writer – Engineering FRQ based in India.

This contract opportunity is designed for experienced mechanical design professionals with deep hands-on expertise in production engineering and CAD-driven product development. You will create original free-response engineering problems based on realistic industry scenarios and develop complete, expert-level solutions. Your work will challenge advanced AI models to reason through practical mechanical design problems involving manufacturability, tolerances, and engineering documentation. You will validate problem difficulty by testing questions against multiple frontier language models and refining them until they provide a meaningful challenge. The role combines technical engineering judgment, problem design, technical writing, and AI evaluation. Working remotely and asynchronously, you will collaborate with AI research teams to improve training data and model performance.

Accountabilities:
  • Author original, technically rigorous free-response engineering problems grounded in realistic mechanical design and production engineering scenarios.
  • Develop complete expert-level solutions that demonstrate sound engineering reasoning, calculations, design decisions, and practical considerations.
  • Create challenging problems covering real-world CAD and mechanical design concepts, including GD&T, tolerance stacks, Design for Manufacturing (DFM), and engineering drawing release.
  • Ensure problems reflect practical production design constraints, engineering trade-offs, and industry-standard workflows.
  • Validate the difficulty and effectiveness of authored problems by running them against three frontier language models.
  • Refine questions and solutions through iterative testing until at least one evaluated model fails to solve the problem correctly.
  • Assess model responses to determine whether problems appropriately test technical reasoning rather than simple knowledge recall.
  • Collaborate with AI research teams to improve the quality of training data and contribute to downstream model performance.
  • Work independently and asynchronously while maintaining high technical standards and consistently meeting project deadlines.
Requirements:
  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Design, or a closely related discipline.
  • 5+ years of hands-on professional or industry experience in production design roles.
  • Demonstrated experience owning mechanical designs through the complete engineering lifecycle, from initial design through manufacturing readiness and drawing release.
  • Strong practical expertise in GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, DFM, CAD, and engineering drawing release processes.
  • Ability to translate real-world engineering challenges into rigorous technical problems and clearly explain expert-level solutions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent engineering judgment and attention to detail.
  • Excellent technical writing skills, including the ability to communicate complex mechanical design concepts clearly and precisely.
  • Experience with production-oriented design processes, engineering documentation, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Ability to work independently and asynchronously while managing technical assignments and meeting deadlines.
  • CSWP or CSWE certification is preferred.
  • Experience working with recognized, well-established, or blue-chip employers is preferred.
  • Previous experience with AI model evaluation, technical problem development, benchmarking, or engineering education is a plus.
Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation: $85 per hour.
  • Fully remote contract opportunity, providing flexibility to work from your preferred location in India.
  • Flexible, asynchronous working environment suited to experienced engineering professionals.
  • Opportunity to apply advanced mechanical design and CAD expertise to the development and evaluation of frontier AI models.
  • Direct contribution to AI training and benchmarking through realistic, expert-level engineering problems.
  • Opportunity to collaborate with AI research teams and contribute to improving next-generation model performance.
  • Exposure to cutting-edge projects at the intersection of mechanical engineering, CAD, and artificial intelligence.
  • Opportunity to use real-world production design experience to influence how advanced AI systems reason about complex engineering challenges.
