This leadership role is responsible for shaping and executing the organization’s external communications strategy, ensuring consistent and impactful messaging across media, public relations, and executive visibility channels. You will serve as a key architect of the organization’s public voice, translating complex mission-driven work into clear, compelling narratives for diverse audiences. The role combines strategic oversight with hands-on execution, including media relations, crisis communications, and spokesperson management. You will build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, influencers, and external partners to elevate visibility and trust. Working closely with executive leadership, you will also support thought leadership and public speaking opportunities. This is a high-impact position for a communications leader who thrives in fast-paced, mission-driven environments and can balance strategy with real-time responsiveness.
In this role, you will lead the organization’s external communications strategy, ensuring alignment with broader organizational priorities and maximizing visibility across key audiences. You will oversee media relations, crisis communications, and storytelling initiatives that elevate the organization’s mission and impact.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive external communications and public relations strategy aligned with organizational goals
- Lead earned media strategy, including proactive outreach, storytelling, and relationship building with journalists and influencers
- Serve as primary media spokesperson and oversee preparation of talking points, messaging, and briefing materials
- Manage crisis communications strategy and lead rapid response efforts for high-sensitivity or time-critical issues
- Translate complex mission areas, including research, care, and policy, into accessible external messaging
- Build and maintain strong relationships with media outlets, partners, and external stakeholders to drive visibility
- Oversee media monitoring, tracking, and performance analysis, including reach, sentiment, and impact reporting
- Collaborate with executive leadership on public speaking engagements and external representation opportunities
- Design and implement media training programs for organizational spokespeople at all levels
- Supervise and develop communications team members, including hiring, performance management, and workload allocation
- Oversee response processes for media inquiries and ensure timely, consistent organizational messaging
This role requires a seasoned communications leader with deep expertise in public relations, media strategy, and crisis management, ideally within mission-driven or policy-adjacent environments. Strong leadership, storytelling, and stakeholder management skills are essential.
- 8–10+ years of progressive experience in communications, public relations, or media relations, including leadership responsibilities
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field
- Proven experience leading comprehensive PR and media relations programs, including crisis communications
- Strong track record of securing high-impact earned media coverage and managing complex media situations
- Experience in advocacy, public affairs, or policy communications, with ability to simplify complex topics for broad audiences
- Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills with executive-level communication ability
- Experience serving as a spokesperson or advising senior leadership on public messaging
- Strong ability to build relationships with media, influencers, and external stakeholders
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing and developing communications teams
- Ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, high-visibility, and mission-driven environments
