Senior Counsel, Corporate Legal Regulatory Engagement

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Senior Counsel, Corporate Legal – Regulatory Engagement in the United States.

This role sits at the intersection of legal expertise, regulatory strategy, and business partnership within a highly regulated insurance environment. You will act as a key advisor on regulatory exams, market conduct investigations, and insurance department inquiries across multiple business lines including underwriting, claims, sales, and product management. The position involves direct engagement with state regulators, shaping responses to complex legal and compliance matters while safeguarding organizational interests. You will also play a critical role in identifying regulatory risks, interpreting evolving statutes, and translating legal insights into actionable guidance for business leaders. Working cross-functionally with legal, compliance, and operational teams, you will help ensure consistent regulatory alignment across the organization. This is a highly visible role requiring strong judgment, strategic thinking, and the ability to influence senior stakeholders. It offers the opportunity to directly impact regulatory outcomes and support compliant, customer-focused business operations at scale.

Accountabilities
  • Lead and oversee direct engagement with state insurance regulators during market conduct exams, investigations, and regulatory inquiries.
  • Provide strategic legal counsel and support in resolving regulatory matters, including negotiation of favorable outcomes.
  • Advise internal stakeholders across underwriting, claims, sales, product, and compliance on regulatory requirements and risk exposure.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda addressing complex insurance regulatory issues arising from examinations and inquiries.
  • Identify, assess, and communicate regulatory risks based on interpretation of state laws, regulations, and regulatory guidance.
  • Collaborate closely with compliance, legal teams, and business units to ensure consistent regulatory strategy and risk mitigation.
  • Support special projects and contribute to the development of regulatory best practices across the organization.
Requirements:
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active bar admission in at least one U.S. state.
  • 6–10 years of experience in property and casualty insurance regulatory law, ideally within a law firm, insurer, or state insurance department.
  • Strong expertise in insurance regulatory frameworks, with deep understanding of state-level insurance laws and compliance requirements (auto insurance experience preferred).
  • Proven experience managing regulatory exams, investigations, and direct interactions with insurance regulators.
  • Excellent legal research, analytical, writing, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong executive communication and presentation abilities, with experience advising senior business leaders.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams.
  • Strong business acumen with a proactive, service-oriented, and solutions-focused mindset.
