CNC Machinist

Job Title: Machinist Level I
Department: Machine Shop
Reports to: Machine Shop Supervisor
Location: Grovetown, Georgia
Shift: 12 hours
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

OVERVIEW:

The Journeyman Machinist Level 1 is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of manual machine tools and shop equipment to perform complex machining operations on castings weighing up to 40,000 lbs. This role requires a strong focus on safety, quality, and productivity, with the ability to work independently and train others as needed. The machinist must interpret engineering drawings and apply sound machining practices to meet production and quality standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote safety and maintain a clean, organized work environment always.
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, goals, and initiatives.
  • Meet or exceed productivity metrics for machining efficiency, including cutting speeds, feeds, and time standards.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles.
  • Perform mathematical and geometric calculations for machining and programming tasks.
  • Follow work instructions, shop travelers, and job-specific documentation.
  • Perform routine maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Accurately complete inspection reports and documentation as required.
  • Operate shop equipment such as drills, grinders, manual milling machines, and cranes.
  • Rig, lift, and manipulate castings weighing up to 40,000 lbs. safely and effectively.
  • Set up and machine large castings on manual equipment, accommodating variations and deformities.
  • Monitor tool wear and replace defective tooling (e.g., tool holders, cutting tools, drills, taps) as necessary.
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, bore gauges, depth micrometers, and protractors correctly.
  • Apply knowledge of deflection and thermal growth when machining hard castings and materials, making necessary adjustments.
  • Re-sharpen CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) tooling as required.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Train and mentor other machinists on all responsibilities listed above.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience:

  • Proven experience operating manual machine equipment in a manufacturing or machine shop environment.
  • Proficiency in reading engineering drawings and applying GD&T.
  • Skilled in machining large or heavy castings preferred.
  • Experience with crane and rigging operations a plus.
  • Capable of mentoring and training others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

-Frequently:

  • Standing, walking, sitting, bending, squatting, and stooping.
  • Lifting, pushing, and pulling objects up to 75 lbs.

-Occasionally:

  • Performing overhead work.
  • Climbing ladders or stairs.
  • Driving forklifts.
  • Operating overhead cranes.
