Volunteer Specialist Part-Time

Washington, DC | Hybrid | $24.03 - $26.44 | Washington Post Top Workplace

Do you have a passion for working with families and individuals in need of healthcare, housing, and community support services? Community of Hope is seeking a 10-hour-per-week Volunteer Specialist. In this role, you’ll ensure there are enough volunteers for program or organization activities, as well as support volunteers and program teams. Join a mission-driven team dedicated to ending homelessness and making a difference every day! This position is located at one of our Short Term Family Housing sites.

What You’ll Do

  • Attends Fam-Club and supervises volunteers, including leading Volunteer Orientations, two evenings/week ensuring that volunteers have proper support for their duties.
  • Develops relationships with Fam-Club participants, including adults, children, and youth, to create a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Recruits, screens, and schedules volunteers across all programs and attends recruiting fairs, as needed.
  • Works with the Youth Engagement Specialist (YES) and full-time Volunteer Specialist to plan and implement engaging and age-appropriate activities for Fam-Club.
  • Ensures that volunteers complete Volunteer Guidelines and Policies prior to volunteering, including securing parent/guardian signatures for minor volunteers.
  • Supports team’s storytelling for “Stories of Hope” and other communications by collecting photo releases and taking photos of residents. Connects Communications team with families who are interested in sharing their story.
  • Maintains communication with volunteers via phone, email, and/or mail to develop and maintain ongoing, long term participation and strengthen involvement (i.e. for continued volunteer involvement as well as to convert to becoming donors).
  • Participate in volunteer appreciation, recognition, and retention efforts and events throughout the year.
Requirements:

Must-Haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Highly motivated and organized with strong communication skills; must be comfortable speaking in front of large groups; must be able to communicate clearly (written and verbally) and effectively for a variety of audiences.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, including internet and Microsoft Office required.
  • Commitment to volunteerism and providing meaningful volunteer experiences required.
  • Able to work, both, independently and with a team.
  • Commitment to supporting families experiencing homelessness and historically under-resourced communities.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including two evenings/week (Mon/Tue or Wed/Thurs) and occasional weekends.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Progress towards a BA/BS degree in elementary education, social work, psychology, etc. a plus.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience volunteering or working with children in a daycare, after-school, camp, or similar setting strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with best practices in child development, youth development programming and management, positive communication skills & behavior management, trauma-informed care are preferred.
