Title: Drains Maintenance Worker 1 - 067256

Job Description


Purpose/Description

The Drains Maintenance Worker 1, under general supervision, performs general maintenance and repair functions to keep Wayne County drains and wastewater facilities in repair. Duties may include pipe vegetation removal, use of various machines, repairing electrical or mechanical equipment, installing, aligning, and balancing new equipment, and repairing buildings or wastewater structures.


Responsibilities


Required Tasks

  • Inspect and perform maintenance on open and closed County Drains including inspecting the culverts for debris.

  • Inspect and perform maintenance on County sanitary interceptor sewers, including removing rags and debris from the siphons and regulators.

  • Prepare reports of inspections and/or work progress.

  • Perform routine custodial duties to maintain drains, grounds and equipment.

  • Assist in the installation of flow meters.

  • Order parts, supplies, or equipment from catalogs or suppliers.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications


This examination is open only to employees of the County of Wayne who, at the time of application, have:

Educational Requirements

  • Regular Status; AND

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent; AND

  • A valid driver's license and a safe driving record; AND

  • Must obtain a CDL Class A with an N Endorsement within 1st year of employment

TYPES OF ASSESSMENTS A Written test (95%) will be administered covering mechanical aptitude. Experience and Training will be rated at (5%).

In the event that the number of eligible applicants is equal to or less than the number required for certification, the Department of Personnel/Human Resources may substitute for the above tests an evaluation of experience and training or other such tests as the Department may deem desirable to determine the competence of the applicants for promotion.

Applicants must comply with the provisions of their union contract regarding career demotions and career shifts. Applications from AFSCME employees who have regular status in this class (and are employed in this class) will not be accepted. 

PURPOSE
To establish a departmental and County-wide promotional eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies. Certification made for the purpose of filling positions which, at the time of certification, are filled by persons having provisional promotions will be governed by the provisions of Section 6 (e) of Rule 8 of the Rules of the Department of Personnel/Human Resources. The eligible list will remain in effect for one (1) year.

GENERAL INFORMATION

How to Apply: The application may be used both for determining admission to the examination and for rating experience and training. Applicants will be notified by mail of the time and place of the examination. Section 5 (b) of Rule 6 of the Rules of the Department of Personnel/Human Resources provides that persons denied permission to compete in an examination may make a written appeal to the Wayne County Civil Service Commission for a final decision within twenty (20) days following the mailing of such notification, stating the basis on which it is felt that their application should be accepted. 

In accordance with the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement, appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.

Appeal Process: Under the Rules of the Department of Personnel/Human Resources (Rule 6, Section 12 and 13), requests to review examinations must be made in writing within twenty (20) days after the mailing of the notice of results. Appeals concerning the ratings must be made in writing within twenty (20) days after the review. The appeal must state why the applicant believes the ratings are improper.
