Description: POSITION: Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Location: Westbrook, CT

Schedule: M-F from 8:30- 5:00pm in office

Position Summary

The Certified Public Accountant (CPA) serves as the dedicated tax professional for Retirement Income Source SFG's retail practice, partnering with Financial Advisors to provide tax planning, tax preparation, and strategic guidance for their clients. This role prepares individual tax returns, conducts tax analysis, and helps advisors deliver tax-efficient retirement planning strategies that support clients' long-term financial goals.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical tax expertise with exceptional client service and a collaborative approach to supporting advisors and their clients.

Key Responsibilities

Tax Planning & Client Advisory

  • Partner with Financial Advisors to develop proactive tax planning strategies for prospective and existing clients.
  • Analyze client tax situations and identify opportunities to improve tax efficiency and support long-term retirement goals.
  • Provide guidance on the tax implications of retirement income, distributions, investment strategies, charitable giving, Roth conversions, and other financial planning decisions.
  • Support advisors during client onboarding by providing tax analysis and answering tax-related questions.
  • Participate in client meetings when specialized tax expertise is needed.

Tax Preparation & Compliance

  • Prepare and review federal and state individual income tax returns for an established client base.
  • Ensure all tax filings are accurate, complete, and submitted in accordance with applicable deadlines.
  • Research federal and state tax laws and remain current on legislative and regulatory changes.
  • Respond to client tax inquiries and resolve tax-related issues professionally and efficiently.
  • Maintain organized and accurate client tax documentation while safeguarding confidential financial information.

Advisor Partnership & Operational Support

  • Serve as the primary internal tax resource for Retirement Income Source SFG's Financial Advisors.
  • Collaborate across departments to ensure tax strategies align with clients' broader retirement plans.
  • Assist advisors with tax-related questions involving prospective and existing clients.
  • Identify opportunities to improve departmental workflows, tax processes, and operational efficiencies.
  • Support special projects and additional responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements: Required Qualifications
  • Active CPA license in good standing and a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience preparing individual income tax returns, providing tax planning services, and interpreting federal and state tax laws.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax concepts to clients and collaborate effectively with Financial Advisors and internal team members.
  • Demonstrated commitment to delivering exceptional client service while maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and the highest ethical standards.
  • Experience working with retirees, high-net-worth individuals, wealth management firms, or financial advisors is preferred. Familiarity with retirement income planning and tax-efficient financial strategies is highly desirable.

Technology Expertise:

  • Proficiency with professional tax preparation software.
  • Experience with accounting software; ability to evaluate and recommend technology improvements is highly valued.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Experience using CRM systems such as Redtail or similar client relationship management platforms.
  • Comfortable learning new technologies to improve efficiency and client service.

Regulatory Awareness:

  • Thorough understanding of IRS regulations, federal and state tax law, and professional ethics.
  • Maintain CPA licensure and required continuing professional education (CPE).
  • Commitment to maintaining client confidentiality and safeguarding sensitive financial information.
  • Adhere to all applicable regulatory and professional standards.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
  • Ability to work for extended periods at a desk using a computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds if/when necessary.
  • Routine use of telephone and email.
  • Office-based role with potential travel to conferences, events, and satellite offices as needed.
