Job Description
The System Director of Revenue Cycle Business Services (Hospital Billing “HB”) leads the day-to-day performance of the hospital system's back-end revenue cycle team, with oversight of billing, account follow-up, appeals, denial management, cash posting/reconciliation, and credit balance resolution functions. This role owns the operational execution of the HB revenue cycle — ensuring claims are billed accurately and timely, accounts are worked effectively, payor trends are identified and addressed, and denial, appeal, cash posting, and credit balance volumes are managed to target. The Director provides hands-on leadership to a team of billing, follow-up, appeals, cash posting, and credit balance staff, sets daily/weekly performance priorities, and serves as the operational escalation point for account-level, financial, and payor-level issues across the HB portfolio.
SPECIFIC SKILLS NEEDED
• Proven leadership of multi-function billing, follow-up, appeals, denial, cash posting, and credit balance teams, including supervisors and leads, with strong coaching, performance management, and staffing skills
• Ability to set departmental priorities, targets, and KPIs (A/R days, clean claim rate, denial rate, cash to target) and hold teams accountable for results
• Expert knowledge of hospital billing and reimbursement, including UB04/1500 requirements, DRGs, Medicare/Medicaid and commercial payor rules, timely filing, and credit balance refund regulations
• Strong analytical skills to identify root causes in denial, aging, and payment variance trends, and to partner with Managed Care and Revenue Integrity on payor escalations and contract issues
• Financial acumen, including cash reconciliation, internal controls, audit readiness, and compliance with CMS and payor requirements
• Working knowledge of an enterprise EHR/billing system (Epic Resolute HB preferred), clearinghouse, and ERA/835 workflows sufficient to direct workflow design, system changes, and testing
• Demonstrated ability to lead process improvement and change across Coding/HIM, Revenue Integrity, Patient Access, Finance, and IT
• Executive-level communication skills, with the ability to present performance, risks, and financial impact to senior leadership; advanced Excel and reporting proficiency
• Demonstrated experience managing day-to-day operational performance, including productivity monitoring and workflow management
• Strong organizational and critical thinking skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities across a high-volume operation
• Working knowledge of Epic Resolute HB or an equivalent enterprise billing system
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, business, finance, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
• 5+ years of hospital revenue cycle experience, including Hospital Billing (HB) operations such as account follow-up, denial management, appeals, cash posting, or credit balance resolution
• 5+ years of progressive leadership experience managing revenue cycle teams, including supervisors and managers
Preferred:
• Master’s degree in healthcare administration, business, finance, or related field
• Experience leading multi-function back-end HB operations (billing, follow-up, denials, cash posting, credit balances) at a health system
• Experience partnering with Managed Care, Revenue Integrity, Finance, or Coding/HIM teams on payor and documentation issues
• Understanding of Medi-Cal billing requirements and regulations
• Experience with Independent Physician Association (“IPA”) and Health Plan relationships
• Epic Resolute HB certification or credentialed proficiency
• Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR), Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP), or similar credential
