Job Description

General Manager, Consumer Utility Apps

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a General Manager, Consumer Utility Apps based in Canada.

This is a high-ownership leadership role for an experienced operator ready to run and scale a global consumer subscription business.
You will own the P&L, define the strategy, shape the product direction, and drive sustainable growth and profitability.
The role combines commercial leadership, product thinking, team building, and hands-on operational execution.
You will work closely with Product, Engineering, User Acquisition, Monetization, Finance, and other shared teams to turn opportunities into measurable results.
The environment is lean and entrepreneurial, with a strong emphasis on speed, experimentation, data-driven decisions, and accountability.
You will also help build the dedicated team and operating model needed to take the business to its next stage.
This opportunity is ideal for a builder who wants to own outcomes rather than simply manage a function.

Accountabilities:

As General Manager, you will have end-to-end responsibility for the performance and evolution of the consumer utility business. You will set priorities, allocate resources, build the right team, and remain accountable for growth, revenue, profitability, and execution.

  • Own the business P&L, including revenue, operating expenses, EBITDA, forecasting, and overall financial performance.
  • Define the business strategy, identifying where to compete, how to win, what to prioritize, and where the strongest growth opportunities lie.
  • Establish a focused product direction in partnership with Product and Engineering, using customer insights, data, competitive intelligence, and experimentation.
  • Partner with User Acquisition and Monetization teams to improve acquisition, conversion, retention, LTV, CAC, ROAS, ARPU, payback, and profitability.
  • Build and maintain a strong experimentation cadence, ensuring insights are rapidly translated into product and commercial improvements.
  • Identify new markets, acquisition channels, partnerships, customer segments, and revenue opportunities.
  • Develop the operating model, ensuring resources are used efficiently and organizational complexity remains proportional to business needs.
  • Build and lead the dedicated business-unit team, initially including a Product Manager and a small engineering group.
  • Define organizational needs, recruit high-performing talent, establish clear ownership, and set measurable goals and accountability standards.
  • Build effective partnerships with shared-service leaders and align their capabilities with the priorities of the business.
  • Lead the integration of the acquired product into the broader organization while preserving strengths and addressing gaps.
  • Use AI and automation as core components of analysis, experimentation, decision-making, and day-to-day operations.
  • Establish an initial 90-day operating plan covering business performance, team structure, growth opportunities, product priorities, costs, risks, and measurable targets.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of the full customer funnel and use data to determine what is driving results and where intervention is required.
  • Remain accountable for business outcomes regardless of where individual functions or resources report organizationally.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate is a commercially minded leader with substantial experience operating consumer digital businesses and a proven ability to translate strategy into measurable growth and profitability. You should be equally comfortable discussing P&L performance, product priorities, customer economics, organizational design, and execution.

  • 8+ years of experience in consumer technology, mobile applications, SaaS, subscriptions, or a related digital business, with meaningful leadership responsibility.
  • Demonstrated experience owning a P&L or carrying direct accountability for significant revenue and profitability outcomes.
  • Strong understanding of consumer subscription economics, including conversion, retention, LTV, CAC, ROAS, payback, margins, and monetization.
  • Experience building and leading cross-functional teams and determining when new capabilities or talent are required.
  • Strong collaboration skills across Product, Engineering, User Acquisition/Marketing, Analytics, Finance, Legal, and other shared functions.
  • Highly analytical and commercially sharp, with the ability to make sound decisions in ambiguous and rapidly changing environments.
  • Builder's mindset with the ability to move fluidly between strategy, financial analysis, product discussions, operational decisions, and recruiting.
  • Experience with VPNs, cybersecurity, privacy, networking, mobile utilities, or adjacent consumer subscription products is strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of the impact of government regulations and compliance considerations within the VPN or privacy technology space.
  • Experience scaling, integrating, or operating an acquired digital product is a plus.
  • High AI fluency and a demonstrated ability to use AI and automation to improve individual and team effectiveness.
  • Strong judgment, ownership, curiosity, speed, and willingness to be directly accountable for results.
  • Ability to balance growth and profitability while maintaining a focused, disciplined approach to execution.

Benefits:

  • High-autonomy General Manager position with end-to-end ownership of a global consumer digital business.
  • Opportunity to shape business strategy, product direction, organizational design, and growth from an early stage of the next phase.
  • Lean operating environment supported by specialized shared-service teams.
  • Significant influence over team building, hiring, and organizational structure.
  • Opportunity to work across Product, Engineering, Growth, Monetization, Analytics, Finance, and other functions.
  • AI-native working environment focused on automation, experimentation, and operational efficiency.
  • Exposure to consumer subscriptions, cybersecurity, privacy, mobile technology, and global digital markets.
  • Opportunity to scale and transform an established product rather than build a business entirely from scratch.
  • Remote-friendly environment with a strong emphasis on ownership, measurable outcomes, and flexible execution.
  • Compensation and additional benefits are provided according to the applicable employment package and location.
