The Community Services Department is looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong work ethic and team-based attitude to assist with routine collection of trash, organics, and recycling, pickup/delivery of rental bins and roll-offs, and routine maintenance.

The Solid Waste Operator's duties will include safely operating refuse/recycling trucks, bin handler and roll-off trucks along designated routes; picking up refuse containers and emptying the containers into trucks; washing, cleaning, fueling, and lubricating trucks; providing valet service and miscellaneous special pickups; communicating with the public in a courteous and professional manner; accurately filling out forms and reports as required.

The Solid Waste Operator position is full-time, 38 hours per week, between Monday and Friday, 5:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Hours of work may vary, and some evening and holiday hours may be required. Actual work schedule depends on crew assignment and will be determined upon hire.

Experience: Demonstrated experience in performing strenuous tasks and the ability to learn the safe and proficient operation of a refuse/recycling truck.

Education:
Completion of high school or equivalent is required.

Licenses: Class B California driver's license. An acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and through employment is required.

Highly Desirable: Sanitation experience and the ability to proficiently operate a side-loader, front loader, roll-off truck, backhoe, truck tractor, forklift, and other related equipment as needed is desirable.

THE COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT

The Community Services Department is responsible for managing and coordinating the work effort of three operating divisions: Maintenance, Solid Waste, and Motor Fleet. To deliver the high-quality services necessary to fulfill the needs of the City Council and the citizens, the department has an annual operating budget of $17.2 million and 38 full-time employees across all divisions.

The Solid Waste Division is tasked with providing residential and commercial sanitation services, including trash, organic, and recycling collection. The Maintenance Division oversees all sewer, street, and sidewalk maintenance; public facilities maintenance; and maintenance of the City’s parks and urban forest. Lastly, the Motor Fleet Division is responsible for maintaining the City's fleet and fueling stations.

Community Services has an annual work plan that includes implementing applicable sustainability actions listed in the Sustainable City, and increasing sustainability efforts throughout City facilities and programs. Among other plans, Community Services is responsible for maintaining the landscape and facilities surrounding the iconic Claremont Village.
