Job Description
About Overwatch Mission Critical
Overwatch is a service-disabled Veteran-owned small business (SDVOB) certified through the National Veterans Business Development Council (NVBDC), delivering construction professional services, talent acquisition, and general contractor solutions within the mission-critical infrastructure industry. Our focus is the construction and management of state-of-the-art data centers, executed with the precision and reliability this industry demands. From high-end engineers to seasoned field professionals, we deploy the talent needed to bring complex infrastructure to life. At Overwatch, it's more than a job — it's purpose.
Role Overview
Overwatch is seeking a Director of Accounting & Tax to lead and own the full accounting and tax function across our multi-entity organization. This is a leadership role responsible for the integrity, efficiency, and scalability of all accounting operations — from daily accounting and close to financial reporting, external audit, and federal and state tax compliance. The Director will serve as a key partner to the VP of Accounting and executive leadership, translating strategic priorities into sound financial operations and controls.
This position requires a doer mentality — someone who is not afraid to roll up their sleeves and get into the details while maintaining the ability to step back and see the big picture. The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting leader and builder who thrives in high-growth, fast-changing environments. You bring deep technical accounting knowledge, a continuous improvement mindset, and the organizational maturity to lead teams, drive process discipline, and implement the technology and automation that scale a growing finance function.
This role reports to the Vice President of Accounting and partners closely with other departments, business units, and executive leadership across the organization.
What You'll Own:
- Own the month-end close process from end to end — journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, intercompany eliminations, and financial statement preparation — across multiple entities and subsidiaries.
- Manage day-to-day accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, inventory, and payroll accounting.
- Maintain and strengthen the financial controls environment, ensuring policies and procedures are current, documented, and consistently applied.
- Oversee cash flow visibility, banking relationships, and treasury operations across the organization.
- Produce accurate, timely financial statements and reporting packages for executive leadership and stakeholders across all subsidiaries.
- Ensure compliance with US GAAP, including ASC 606 revenue recognition across complex multi-entity and project-based service models, and ASC 842 lease accounting across a significant and growing lease portfolio.
- Lead external audit engagements — coordinating with auditors, managing PBC requests, and resolving technical accounting issues.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis in collaboration with the VP of Accounting.
- Serve as the primary point of contact with external tax partners across key tax areas including sales tax, voluntary disclosure agreements (VDA), income tax, franchise tax, and property tax.
- Coordinate and oversee all federal and state income tax filings and multi-state tax compliance in partnership with external advisors.
- Lead and optimize NetSuite and other accounting technology to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
- Develop and implement automation and AI-enabled workflows to accelerate recurring processes and reduce manual work.
Leadership
- Build and lead a high-accountability, performance-oriented accounting team with a culture of accuracy, ownership, and continuous improvement.
- Operate as both a strategic leader and hands-on contributor — willing to roll up your sleeves while building the team and processes around you.
- Manage staff selection, onboarding, training, development, and performance across the accounting function.
- Partner effectively with external auditors, tax advisors, banks, and other professional service providers.
- Bring a builder's mindset — identifying capability gaps, designing scalable solutions, and executing with speed and precision.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- CPA or Master's in Accounting preferred; equivalent combination of education and progressive hands-on experience will be considered.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting, including meaningful time in an accounting leadership role.
- Demonstrated experience leading and developing a team of accounting professionals.
- Hands-on experience managing day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, inventory, and the financial close process.
- Proven track record leading external audits with regional or national accounting firms.
- Comfortable serving as the primary point of contact with external tax partners across key tax areas — including sales tax, VDA, income tax, franchise tax, and property tax. The ability to communicate clearly on tax topics and manage tax relationships effectively is what matters, not deep tax expertise.
- Strong working knowledge of US GAAP with the initiative to stay current on accounting standards, pronouncements, and regulatory updates as they apply to the business.
- Must be comfortable working in an in-office setting five days a week.
- NetSuite experience preferred.
- Experience leading or supporting system implementations and enhancements a plus.
Technical Proficiencies
- NetSuite (including NetClose, NetAsset, or equivalent modules)
- Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word)
- Rippling or equivalent payroll platform
- Ramp or equivalent expense management platform
- AI-enabled accounting workflows and automation tools
Benefits:
Overwatch offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, 401(k) retirement plan, paid time off, and relocation assistance available.
OVERWATCH is committed to creating a diverse work environment and is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. OVERWATCH considers candidates regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or veteran status.
