STATUS: Full time
LOCATION: Clifton Springs Hospital
DEPARTMENT: Phlebotomy
SCHEDULE: Variable 7 am - 4:30 pm; Weekend rotation every 4th Saturday 7 am - 12 pm.
SUMMARY
The Senior Phlebotomist provides instruction and training in all aspects of laboratory procedures to new personnel. Responsibilities may include running day-to-day operations of patient service centers or other affiliated centers, working closely with the Phlebotomy Supervisor, assuring excellence in quality and safety, problem-solving, and interacting with other members of the health care team. Provides feedback to department leadership regarding internal and external problems or areas of improvement. To obtain by venous and capillary puncture a sufficient quantity of blood to enable laboratory personnel to accurately perform analysis as requested by the physician.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Collects blood specimens via venipuncture and skin puncture according to physician orders, applicable to regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure complete and accurate specimens for testing.
Ensures the patient is provided the necessary information and is comfortable and safe.
Identifies patient, communicates the procedures to be done, and performs assigned phlebotomy duties.
Adheres to established safety guidelines, including the use of appropriate equipment and practices.
Obtains the required specimens, labels, and transports specimens to the specified area.
Prepares specimens for processing and completes paperwork associated with the test ordered.
Manages incoming calls while providing necessary information.
Greet patients and/or their representatives and provide direction as needed.
Scheduling or pre-scheduling patient appointments, if applicable.
Interviewing the patient and/or their representative for necessary information and completing the registration process as defined by policy.
Verification of insurance eligibility/coverage and obtaining necessary authorizations when applicable.
Ensures the accuracy of all data collected while meeting the regulatory requirements as outlined by department policy.
Exhibits effective communication skills when dealing with patients, physicians, and hospital personnel.
Responsible for effectively mentoring those learning phlebotomy and assuring they are following all policies and procedures associated with proper collection/processing and transport of laboratory specimens.
Through mentoring, coaching, and positive reinforcement, provides direction and assists the supervisor or designee in facilitating the workflow to ensure duties are completed timely and accurately while meeting regulatory standards.
Under the direction of the supervisor or designee, assists with personnel duties such as orientation, training, input on performance evaluations, and coaching for performance improvement.
Flexibility and transportation to multiple Patient Service Centers or affiliated centers as required. May work alone at these centers.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
2 years of phlebotomy experience.
High School Diploma/or Equivalent
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Data entry, secretarial, or billing background considered a plus.
Knowledge of Medical/laboratory terminology preferred.
PBT (ASCP) certification preferred.
Clean NYS driver’s license preferred.
H.S. or equivalent with specialization in science-related courses preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.
PAY RANGE: $20.50 - $25.50
The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for successful applicants. It may be modified in the future. Pay is determined by factors including experience, clinical licensure date, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
