Location: Lake Nona Town Center, Orlando, FL
Department: Finance & Accounting
Reports To: Director of Accounting
FLSA Status: Exempt
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Position Summary

The Project Accountant is responsible for supporting the financial management of construction and development projects by overseeing project accounting functions, maintaining accurate job cost records, and partnering with the Project Delivery team to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting. This position plays a key role in budget management, cost analysis, project reconciliations, and financial compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and approve project invoices and contractor pay applications.
  • Create and maintain project budgets and budget amendments within the MRI Job Cost module.
  • Meet with Project Captains and Project Coordinators to review project budgets and financial activity.
  • Process project cost transfers and budget transfers.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly project cost variance reports.
  • Reconcile job cost activity to the general ledger.
  • Perform month-end close activities, including preparing journal entries and ensuring timely completion of assigned accounting tasks.
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and investigate and resolve reconciling items.
  • Complete balance sheet reconciliations to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
  • Maintain accurate accounting records for construction and development projects.
  • Assist with project cost allocations for completed developments.
  • Support annual financial statement audits and tax return preparation.
  • Partner with the Project Delivery team to ensure accurate tracking and reporting of project costs.
  • Assist the Director of Accounting with special projects and other accounting responsibilities as assigned.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support the Accounting Department.

Requirements:

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of project accounting experience.
  • Experience within a real estate development or general contracting environment is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with MRI Software and/or Nexus Payables is highly preferred.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid Florida driver's license and reliable personal transportation.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, job cost accounting, and construction accounting practices.
  • Ability to interpret financial statements, project cost reports, and other financial data.
  • Highly analytical with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to navigate complex, non-routine accounting issues.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to remain seated and work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
