Job Description

At Mills James, our mission is to craft experiences that deepen human connections and inspire people to care and act. We are seeking a talented and experienced Audio Specialist to join our production team at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

This hands-on role is responsible for the setup, operation, maintenance, and execution of professional audio systems supporting live events. The Audio Specialist serves as an A1 or A2 on site and collaborates closely with producers, production managers, clients, talent, and technical crews to deliver exceptional event experiences.

The ideal candidate combines advanced technical audio expertise with strong leadership skills, a service-oriented mindset, and a passion for live event production.

What You'll Do
Event Audio Production
• Attend pre-conference meetings with Producers and Production Managers to determine event requirements.
• Collaborate with talent management and production staff to assess technical and logistical needs.
• Serve as the lead audio professional (A1 or A2) for meetings, conferences, and live events.
• Direct all aspects of audio execution, including:
o Selection and organization of music content.
o Recording and performance of voiceovers.
o Assignment and management of talent microphones.
o Placement and operation of audience response microphones.
• Operate, patch, tune, troubleshoot, and maintain audio systems to ensure flawless event execution.
Technical Planning & Equipment Management
• Create and maintain documentation related to audio system installation, signal flow, patching, tuning, and operation.
• Perform system testing and troubleshooting before, during, and after events.
• Manage inventories of expendables, replacement parts, and audio-related supplies.
• Ensure all equipment is maintained and operated in accordance with company and safety standards.
Leadership & Team Support
• Lead and supervise staff, freelancers, and vendors during event setup, operation, and strike.
• Evaluate freelancers performing audio-related functions.
• Provide coaching, direction, and support to crew members.
• Assist other departments and Mills James locations as needed.

What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of four (4) years of related live event audio experience.
• Professional appearance and demeanor in a hospitality-focused event environment.
• Strong organizational, communication, and client service skills.
• Ability to follow established processes and protocols.
• Exceptional attention to detail and troubleshooting abilities.
• Ability to learn and utilize Mills James MediaPulse facilities management software.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Passport.
• Willingness to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.
• Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Technical Expertise
• Thorough understanding of live event audio systems and signal flow.
• Experience with:
o Line-array and point-source speaker systems.
o Speaker system design and deployment.
o Frequency coordination and wireless microphone management.
o Digital and analog audio consoles.
o Playback, recording, and audio reinforcement systems.
o Equalization (EQ), system tuning, and optimization.
• Advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities.
• Working knowledge of video, lighting, computers, and event technology systems.
• IT networking and video conferencing experience is a plus.
