About This Position

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the nursing department’s management, the RN assumes the responsibility for the nursing processes of assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation needed to deliver safe, evidence based care within their scope of practice.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide a high level of nursing care in units to which assigned.
  • Collects and assesses initial and on-going data about the health status of the patient.
  • Initiates and/or revises an individualized plan of care that includes immediate and long-term outcomes for the patient/family and reflects the plan of the entire health care team.
  • Carries out interventions safely and in compliance with policy to facilitate achievement of expected outcomes.
  • Performs both complex and routine treatments as prescribed by physicians, approved nursing protocols that align with clinical assessment of patient's condition.
  • Evaluates and documents patient response to intervention/therapy based upon expected outcomes and modifies plan of care as necessary based on patient status. Contacts physician and other care team members when necessary.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary patient care planning and evaluates patient progression in preparation for safe discharge.
  • Uses professional judgment and critical thinking to prepare, prioritize and execute the patient's plan of care consistent with patient assessment data and physician's treatment plans and professional standards of evidence-based practice/care.
  • Incorporates the patient's physiological, psychological, cultural, developmental and spiritual needs into the plan of care.
  • Provides patient education by explaining procedures, medications and giving instructions at a level the patient can understand; addresses patient’s questions and concerns; verifies patient informed consent when indicated.
  • Documents and communicates all required components of patient care.
  • Provides direct patient care in the inpatient perioperative setting.
  • Directs and delegates support personnel in implementing patient's plan of care, provides guidance, and immediately intervenes with deviation standards of care.
  • Assists in the education and training of other nurses and nursing students.
  • May serve as a preceptor for new nurses, facilitating their orientation and onboarding process.
  • Orient new nurses to the specific policies, procedures, and workflows of different med/surg units.
  • Collaborate with unit managers to assess the learning needs of new nurses.
  • Provide ongoing guidance and support to new nurses.
  • Act as a resource for clinical questions and assist with problem-solving in complex patient care situations.
  • Provides leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession and serves as a mentor to nursing students and other nurses.
  • Apply leadership concepts, skills, and decision making in the provision of high-quality nursing care and healthcare team coordination.
  • Collaborates and cooperates with other members of the health care team in meeting the preventive, emergency, and restorative health needs of a patient in a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment.
  • Collaborates with the health care team to provide pre and post-operative care.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the State of Kansas or has work permit from the State Board of Nursing
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Bachelors in Nursing
  • Knowledge of general nursing theory and practice; knowledge of principles, methods and techniques involved in performing general nursing services and adapting or modifying standards of nursing practices for care of specific medical cases.
  • BLS certification required or must complete BLS certification with in the first two weeks of employment;
  • ACLS certification required within twelve months of employment.

Infection Control: Initial and Ongoing training in dealing with infection control. Trainings could include but are not limited to, blood borne pathogens, bodily fluids and bio hazardous materials as it applies to your daily work environment.

Patient Interaction: Frequent

HIPAA: This position will have access to the following Protected Health Information in order to carry out the duties related to their position at Hays Medical Center based on the following criteria:
Primary – required (routine) to do the job;
Secondary – required for the job, but mostly be exception; and
None – no approved access
