About This Position
Performs complex (journal-level) accounting work. Work involves grant program accounting, preparing financial statements, records, documents, and reports. May specialize in some phase of accounting work such federal and state grant accounting, cost allocations, budgeting, and compliance reporting. Assist with annual financial audit. May provide guidance to others. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.
- Essential duties and functions include the following.
- Classifies, codes, enters and post data from accounting documents and records.
- Maintains and supports internal systems and controls established to provide accounting of expenditures, revenues, and budgets, for agency programs to ensure agency assets are accounted for properly.
- Prepares periodic analyses of fund balances and expenditures for different funds and programs; prepares related reports to support estimates, cost data, and the budgetary process.
- Checks accounting operations in progress, and reviews financial records and data entry for accuracy and conformance with legal and departmental procedures and regulations.
- Research and reconciliation of discrepancies in accounts, bank statements, or fund balances, and reports findings relevant to fund accounting framework.
- Audits accounting and financial documents for accuracy and compliance with policies and procedures, and for compliance with state and federal statutes.
- Performs related work and special projects as assigned.
Education
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in accounting.
Experience
At least 2-3 years’ experience with governmental fund accounting and financial operations. Experience with computerized accounting applications (QuickBooks does not meet these qualifications), and intermediate Microsoft Excel proficiency is required. Experience with MIP Fund Accounting is preferred.

Ability to work smoothly in an integrated fashion with other team members and all agency staff
Prioritizing and organizing, with the goal of accomplishing the task at hand
Coordinates accounting operations with other divisions
Works effectively on several ongoing projects concurrently
Provides solutions within fund accounting principles, and GAAP
Accurately performs detailed numerical work
Ability to identify underlying principles and information by breaking down data different functions
Communicates well with others to increase understanding
