POSITION SUMMARY

Able to operate a vehicle for long periods of time. Knowledge of vehicle operation, safety regulations, map reading, and reporting are required. This position requires the knowledge of transporting frail elderly and individuals with special needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for transporting frail elderly and individuals with disabilities.
  • Responsible for transporting participants to and from senior sites, medical appointments, etc., (which includes assisting participants in wheel chairs, walkers, etc., with boarding and exiting the vehicle, loading equipment as needed.)
  • Responsible for filling out route sheets.
  • Complete and submit all required reports and documentation.
  • Observe and obey all traffic laws and safety regulations.
  • Maintain safety precautions when participants are boarding and departing the vehicle.
  • Follow assigned route and adhere to set schedules.
  • Keep assigned van clean and fueled.
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage and injuries to the Transportation Director as they occur.
  • Comply with the policies and procedures as outlined in the Transportation handbook.
  • Must be able to maintain appropriate license.
  • Must have pleasant manner and the ability to communicate effectively and professional at all times.
  • Attend Safety /Driver Training Meetings as required.
  • Other projects may be assigned as needed.

Requirements:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with providing door-to-door service to the frail elderly & disabled preferred.
  • Familiar with Orange County roads and highways.
  • Ability to read Thomas Guide/maps and follow instructions.
  • Ability to communicate with participants and dispatcher.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read and comprehend oral and written directions/instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Supervisors, co-workers and relate to adults with special needs in a positive way; maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid California Class C Driver's License
  • Valid Medical Examiners Certificate (DL51A)
  • Pass the DOT (Department of Transportation) Medical Exam.
  • Driver Class C Revised June 1, 2026

The employee must regularly assist/push clients in wheelchairs (50-75 lbs.) or on to vehicle ramps. The employee must stoop and or bend on a regular basis while securing wheelchair tie downs on vans. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
